Ann Frank’s The Diary of a Young Girl


is one of the most renowned and most
discussed Jewish published books of
the Holocaust. Frank notes her life
during WWII, as a Nazi refugee of the
Netherlands
Acknowledged for the quality of her
writing, her diary has become one of the
world's most widely read books, and
has been the basis for several plays
and films.
Annelies Marie Frank was born June 12, 1929 in
Frankfurt, Germany.

Frank, her mother,
Edith Frank and older
sister, Margot Frank
To try to escape the Nazi’s
harsh laws, Edith, Anne and
Margot moved to Aachen,
Germany and Otto moved to
Amsterdam.

Everyday a new shipment of


Jews were being deported.
Otto decided to create a
hiding place for the Frank’s
incase they needed to seek
refuge.
Margot was called up, or
selected, to be deported
to a concentration camp,
Sunday July 5, 1942.
Immediately the Frank’s
left for their shelter.

July 1942, the family went into hiding


in the hidden rooms of Anne's father,
Otto Frank's, office building.
The Frank’s hiding place is known as
“The Secret Annex”.
It is located in Otto’s office attic at
263 Prinsengracht, Amsterdam.

located on the third
floor of Otto’s office
building. The
entrance is covered
by a bookcase.

Joining the Frank’s in the annex (attic) were four other people, Mr.
van Pels, Mrs. van Pels, Peter van Pels and Dr. Pfeffer.

 Four of Otto’s employees helped the families hide. Their names


are, Miep Gies, Victor Kugler, Johannes Kleiman, and Bep
Voskuijl.
Anne and Peter’s relationship started off with them
disliking each other, but later it developed into a
romance.

Mr. Frank taught Anne, Margot and


Peter English, French,
mathematics and history everyday,
and they received one short hand
lesson per week.
After two years of
hiding the eight were
caught. An
anonymous person
called the Gestapo on
them.

On August 4, 1944 the


eight refugees plus
Mr. Kugler and Mr.
Kleiman were
arrested by the
Gestapo and taken to
Gestapo
headquarters.
After a few weeks at Gestapo
Headquarters, Mr. Kleiman was
released for medical care. Mr.
Kugler was deported and spent
eight months in a forced labor
camp.

The Franks, van Pels, and


Dr. Pfeffer were taken to
Westerbork, then two weeks
later, Auschwitz-Birkenau.
Immediately as they arrived at Auschwitz-
Birkenau, the men and women were separated.
This was the last time Otto saw his family.
In Auschwitz-Birkenau, Edith Frank died and Mr. van
Pels was taken to the gas chamber.
Peter van Pels was taken with the S.S. when they left
Auschwitz. Peter was never seen again. Otto was
the only one of the eight who survived.

Anne, Margot and Mrs. van Pels were taken to
Bergen Belsen concentration camp.
Mrs. van Pels died during the spring of 1945.
Anne and Margot, her sister died of typhus fever
during March of 1945. Two months after Anne
died, Bergen-Belsen was liberated.

Otto Frank was the sole
survivor of his family.

Immediately after he was


liberated he searched for
his family, but he came to
realize they had all died.

Otto married Fritzi Geiringer


during November of 1952.
Fritzi had one daughter,
Eva. Eva and Anne were
friends before the war.
Eva Schloss wrote a book about her
experiences titled, Eva’s Story.
Eva travels all over the world to talk
about her novel.

returned to Amsterdam and
found her diary in the attic.

Her book was published in 1952


as The Diary of a Young Girl,
her life is portrayed from June
12, 1942 until August 1944.

We wouldn’t know Anne’s story


today if it had not been for her
13th birthday present, a diary.
The Diary of a Young Girl is
translated into 67 different
languages, Sold over 31 million
books and is one of the most
wildly read books.
