Case Presentation

ANESHIA BROWN
Background Info

 My resident is 56 years old


 She is a Native American woman from Pembroke, NC
 She was the only child growing up, so it was a little lonely for her, but
she had a good life
 Throughout her life her occupation was a plant worker
 She has one daughter, one son and three grandchildren
Problem Statement

 She has been in the facility since September of 2018


 She was diagnosed with Emphysema
 Damage to air sacs in lungs
 Makes it hard for you to catch your breath
 Caused from smoking cigarettes
 She was also diagnosed with Bipolar disorder
Services

 The services she receives is salon services, therapy services,


psychiatric services, manicure and pedicure services, skilled nursing,
activities, and some counseling.
Strengths and Limitations

 Strengths
 She keeps a good faith and great relationship with God, emphasizes the
importance of her independence, requires min. to no assistance with
anything

 Limitations
 She has bad smoking habit
Assessment Goals

 Allow resident to make decisions and/or choices related to self-


directed involvement
 Plan and choose which activities keep independence
 Decrease smoking habit
Specific Interventions and Time
Frame
 Occupational and Physical Therapy for 90 days
 Produce care plans that allows Mary to become more social and
interactive every 3 months
 Talk with counselors and psychiatrist about coping skills once a
month
Biases

 There wasn’t any biases prior or during the interview


Differences

 I am a African American woman


 I have four sisters and four brothers
 My occupations throughout my life has been food service and retail
 I was born in Georgia but raised in Clinton, NC
Life Experiences

 She has always had a smoking problem


 Her smoking habits increased due after her son’s incarceration
 She was eventually hospitalized because of her breathing
complications
 Which led her to being sent to the facility
Staff Recommendations

 The staff wants her to continue to keep her independence


 The staff loves her being there, but since she’s capable of doing
everything on her own they believe she should go to another home
where she has even more freedom.
Research

 My findings include
Heavy smoking and depression correlate with one another which causes
unhealthy behaviors and negative effects
Depressing moods will continue to increase the heavier smoking you do
Smokers are likely experience depressed moods while trying to quit, which
can lead to relapsing
Recommended Changes for
Facility
 Include counseling services to all residents once a week
