DIALECT IS ...
• A form of a language that is specific to a
particular region or group
• Different terms are used for different things
• Includes pronunciation, grammar and vocabulary

Examples:
• in USA, there are Southern dialect and Northern
dialect
• Southern dialect – “howdy”
• Northern dialect – “hello”
ACCENT IS ...
• An inflection that occurs with word pronunciation
• How people of certain region pronounce the
words

Example:
• American – pronounce “hello” by speaking ‘h’
sound
• British – pronounce “hello” without speaking ‘h’
sound
