The Library

What is a library?
It is a room or building where a
collection of books , periodicals
and so much more is kept for
reading or reference.
It also includes films and
recorded music for people to
read or borrow.
What is a library?
It is a depository of a tremendous
amount of information through
the books, magazines, films,
periodicals, journals, discs ,tape
recordings, computer tapes, etc
accumulated through the years.
The services and collections of
a library maybe intended for:
- people who choose not to buy for
themselves
- who need materials that no individual
can possibly own
- who require professional assistance
with their research
Library

- Provides the services of a librarian.
Librarians are experts at finding
and organizing information and at
interpreting information needs.
- Provides quiet areas for studying
and offer areas to facilitate group
studies.

The Library Classification
The two most common are:
a. The Library of Congress
Classification (LCC)
b. Dewey Decimal System (DDC)
- 95 % of the libraries in the world
use the DDC
a. The Library of Congress
Classification (LLC)
- A system of library classification
developed by the Library of
Congress. The classification was
invented by Herbert Putman in
1897, just before he assumed the
librarianship of Congress.
- In this system books are grouped
according to 21 major classes
21 major classes:
A. General Works – Polgygraphy
B. Philosophy, Psychology, Religion
C. Auxiliary Sciences of History (General)
D. World History and Topography( expect American
History)
E. America (general) and United States (general)
F. Local History of the United States and British,
Dutch, French, and Latin America
G. Geography, Anthropology, Recreation
H. Social Science
J. Political Science
K . Law
L. Education
M. Music
N. Fine Arts
P. Language and Literature
Q. Science
R. Medicine
b. The Dewey Decimal
Classification System (DDC)
- A system of library classification
made up of ten main classes
designated by a three-digit number.
Each class is divided into ten
subdivisions or sections
- This was developed by Melvil
Dewey in 1876.
The Areas in DDC are:
000 – 099 General References or Works
encyclopedias, almanacs, bibliographies,
magazines, newspapers, general collections,
manuscripts, journalism
100-199 Philosophy, Psychology, logic and
related discipline
Psychology, Metaphysics, Logic, Ancient,
Medieval and Modern Philosophy.
The Areas in DDC are:
200 – 299 Religion
Religion , History of religion, Kinds of Religion,
Church History, Theology, Mythology, the Bible
300-399 Social Science
Statistics, Political Science, Economics,
Government, Law, Education, Sociology,
Social Welfare, Public Service and Utilities,
Commerce, Customs and Folklore
The Areas in DDC are:
400 – 499 Language
Comparative Linguistics, the kinds of
Languages, Word Study, Grammar,
Dictionaries and Composition
500-599 Natural Science
Mathematics, Astronomy, Physics, Chemistry,
Paleontology, anthropology, Earth Science,
Biology, Botany and Zoology, Geology
The Areas in DDC are:
600 – 699 Useful Arts, Technology, and Applied
Science
Medical Sciences, Engineering, Home Economics,
Agriculture, and Related Technologies, Inventions,
Business, and other occupation for men
700-799 Fine Arts and Recreation
Sculpture, Painting, Architecture, Drawing, Music,
Photography, Decorative and Graphic Arts,
Sports, Recreational and Performing Arts
The Areas in DDC are:
800 – 899 Literature and Rhetoric
American, English, Anglo-Saxon, Germanic,
French, Italian, Spanish, Classical and Modern
Greek literature; poetry, essay and plays
900-999 General Geography, History and
Biography
Geography, history of the ancient world, Europe,
Asia, Africa, North and South America and other
parts of the world, travel, collected biography and
other related disciplines

i. Appendix
a.Title Page – found near the front of a
book. It contains the title, author,
location the book was published and
the name and year of the publishing
company.
b. Dedication- is optional and written if
the author of the book wants to
dedicate his work to a particular
person or persons.
c. Copyright Page – found at the back of the
title page. It contains the copyright date, the
copyright owner’s name, the country where
the book was printed and a statement
whether permission is granted to reproduce
any part of the book.
d. Preface or Foreword (Introduction)
-part of the book where the author or a friend
gives the purpose of writing book. It comes
before the table of contents.
e. Table of Contents– this is the list of topics,
titles of the chapters or sections of the book
and the pages where they can be found.
This comes before the body of the book.
f. Acknowledgement
-part of the book that is written to give
recognition to the people, entities who
extended help to the author in the
preparation of the book.
g. Lists of Maps and Illustration– this
usually placed after the table of contents.
This lists the maps and pictures in the order
in which they appear in the book.
h. The Text or Body
- the main part or the reading matter of the
book.
i. Appendix– this is found at the back part of
the book. This contains added information or
additional information/ matter placed at the
end for it does not fit into any special place in
the book itself.
j. Bibliography
- the lists of books and other printed
materials and electronic sources used by the
author as references in writing the book.
k. Index– it is a detailed alphabetical listing of
all important persons, places and topics
contained in the book and the pages where
the entries are found.
l. Glossary
-also found at the back part of some books. It
is a special or little dictionary that lists the
difficult words, foreign, technical or scientific
terms used in the book.
