INTRODUCTION
• The construction industry is revolutionizing is to major ways.one way is
the development of construction techniques, such as using automated
tools in construction.
• The major roadblocks towards development of high performance concrete
using steel fiber is the high cost involved, availability an also problem of
corrosion .Coconut fiber being the most ductile all natural fiber has the
potential to be used as reinforcement material in concrete. It is
biodegradable ,so the impact on environmental is minimal.
• The aim of this study is to identify the improvement in strength
characteristics of concrete with the addition oil coated coconut fiber. In the
study ,coconut fiber is added to concrete and plain cement concrete is
used as reference to study its effect on flexural, compressive ,tensile
strength properties and also drying shrikange.
• Fiber is coated with oil so as to decrease the water absorption. Some of
the advantages being observed are low cost, low density, reasonable
specific strength, good thermal insulation, reduce wear and ability to be
reycled with minimal impact of environmental .
ABSTRACT
• Sustainability is wide accepted concept in modern construction scenario.Even
though the construction industry revolutionizing in a significant manner in
terms of both equipment and material used, the cost of construction has
skyrocketed along with the deteriorative impact of environment.
• Coconut fiber is available in abundance at the test site which makes it quite
viable as a reinforced material in concrete.Further,it acts as a new source of
the income for the coconut producer to gets the benefits of the new demand
generated by the construction industry. It is an effective method for the
disposal for coir mattress waste which will reduce the demand for additional
waste disposal infrastructre and decrease the load on existing landfill and
incinerators.
• This study aimed at analyzing the variation in strength in coconut fiber(oil
coated raw and oil process fibers)reinforced concrete and varying fiber
concrete and to compare with that of conventional concrete.
• The influence of shape of fiber n strength is also studied by testing on coconut
fiber mesh of predetermined dimesnion. The optimal %of both the process
fibre strands and raw fiber meshes where found out by trial and error and the
optimum% of superplasticizer needed for the required workability was also
determined.
• KEYWORDS-compressive strength,tensile strength,flexural coconut fiber
reinforced concrete,fiber mesh.
OBJECTIVES
• The aim of this study is to investigate the effect of
oil coated coir fiber on physical properties of
concrete.
• To find out variation in compressive strengths of
coconut fiber reinforced concrete using fiber
strands and raw fiber meshes at varying fiber
contents and to compare it with that of
conventional concrete.
• To determine the influence of shape of fiber on
strength of concrete.
SCOPE
• The effect of coconut fiber on high strength concrete should be
studied and thus the use of coconut fiber concrete can be extended
to industrial and commercial building.since the corrosion is not
done, the applicability of coconut reinforced concrete in reinforced
construction should be tested.
• Coconut fiber is good insulator& itself and as such improve thermal
properties of concrete. This particularly used in topical country like
India where the mercury levels are quite high for most part of the
year,so as to maintain the room temparature within comfort levels
of inhabitants. It can also reduces the load on air conditioning
system thus reducing the power consumption.
• The acoustic properties o concrete reinforced with other natural
fiber have been studied in the past using and impendence tube
apparatus and the results are fair enough to justify the use of
coconut fiber s an alternative which is a good absorbent due to the
presence of surface pores.
LIMITATION
• This study on coconut fiber reinforced
concrete is limited to a rural residential
construction.
• The mix design for M20 concrete is usually
used in building of height up to 10m.
• Mix design for concrete is done for mild
exposure condition and corrosion study is not
done.
CONCLUSION
• At 5% addition of coconut fiber with water cement ration of 0.5,
compressive strength test yielded best result. However ,the compressive
strength decreased on further fiber addition.
• When the fiber content is increased ,there is an increase in flexural
strength with a maximun 5% of fiber. However when the fiber content is
increased beyond these values downward slope of the graph is
observed. This is also due to the binding properties of the coconut fiber
owning t its high tensile strength of 21.5Mpa.
• Decrease in trend in compressive strength was observed in concrete with
mesh shaped fibre.
• Due to its relatively higher strength and ductility,it can be good
replacement for asbestos fiber in roofing sheets .
• Since higher strength attained at lower design mix .It can be used
manufacturing building blocks as relatively lower cost in comparison to
the plain concrete blocks, thus making it suitable for rural residential
building up to the 10 M height or as protection wall around building
