Leadership Styles
A brief insight into the commonly seen styles of leadership in the
corporate and casual world
Styles of Leadership – What’s that?

• A leadership style refers to a leader’s characteristic behaviours when

directing, motivating, guiding and managing groups of people.
• Great leaders can inspire political movements and social change. They
can also motivate others to perform, create and innovate
Who gave us these “Styles of Leadership”?
• Kurt Lewin, a German-American psychologist is
known as one of the modern pioneers of social,
organisational & applied psychology in the
United States.
• In 1939, a group of researchers led by Kurt Lewin
set out to identify the different styles of
leadership by studying schoolchildren
• Several schoolchildren were assigned to one of
three groups – each with an authoritarian,
democratic or delegative leader. The children Kurt Lewin
were then led in an arts and crafts project while
researchers observed the behaviour of children
in response to the different styles of leadership.
