1
INTRODUCTION
• Limited availability of petroleum
products,
electricity in rural areas
• Limitation of fossil fuels
• Solar energy as source and make more
suitable for rural areas.
• More efficient than gasoline and diesel
engine.

NBN SSoE, T. E. (Mechanical), Seminar – 2015 Course, [2018 – 19]

2
WHAT IS STIRLING ENGINE
• Invented by Robert sterling (1816)
• Heat engine
• Converts heat energy to mechanical
energy.
• Theoretical efficiency is nearly equal to
their
maximum efficiency
• Developed in the automobile field

NBN SSoE, T. E. (Mechanical), Seminar – 2015 Course, [2018 – 19]

3
BASIC STIRLING ENGINE

NBN SSoE, T. E. (Mechanical), Seminar – 2015 Course, [2018 – 19]

4
WORKING PRINCIPLE
• If we have a fixed amount of gas in a
fixed volume of space and we raise the
temperature of that gas, the pressure
will also increased
• If we have a fixed amount of gas and
we compress it (decrease the volume of
its space) the temperatures of the gas
will be increased

NBN SSoE, T. E. (Mechanical), Seminar – 2015 Course, [2018 – 19]

5
STIRLING ENGINE WITH SOLAR
• Solar Heat energy source can be used
• Convert solar power into mechanical
power
• Reduce cost and complexity
• Operate by letting heat flow of a hot
source
• Efficiency is more than photo voltaic cell

NBN SSoE, T. E. (Mechanical), Seminar – 2015 Course, [2018 – 19]

6
SOLAR DISH COLLECTOR

NBN SSoE, T. E. (Mechanical), Seminar – 2015 Course, [2018 – 19]

7
SCOPE IN INDIAN MARKET
• On a medium-Large scale- electricity
generation
• For industries
• On a small scale- home and buildings
• In agriculture
• Rural electrification

NBN SSoE, T. E. (Mechanical), Seminar – 2015 Course, [2018 – 19]

8
LARGE SCALE ELECTRICITY
GENERATION
• The cost of electricity generated is cheapest
when compared to other solar techniques.
• AC output
• There is no need for new transmission lines

NBN SSoE, T. E. (Mechanical), Seminar – 2015 Course, [2018 – 19]

9
ON A SMALL SCALE
• Better than photo voltaic systems.
• Homes and buildings
• 24 hour electricity guarantee is an
attractive feature to put up

NBN SSoE, T. E. (Mechanical), Seminar – 2015 Course, [2018 – 19]

10
AGRICULTURE
• Solar Stirling water pumps
• Solar Stirling pump is very compact
hence can be shared by various field

NBN SSoE, T. E. (Mechanical), Seminar – 2015 Course, [2018 – 19]

11
RURAL ELECTRIFICATION
• To reduce transmission losses
• Solar Stirling Generators can be set up in
the
village premises itself.
• Single plant can be used for various
surrounding villages

NBN SSoE, T. E. (Mechanical), Seminar – 2015 Course, [2018 – 19]

12
PRIVATIZATION
• Small investment
• Manufacturing of Solar Stirling Generators
is possible with minimum hassle.
• Industries in private sector can manufacture
these and market not only within the nation,
but also abroad
• Private sectors find maximum scope in this
field.

NBN SSoE, T. E. (Mechanical), Seminar – 2015 Course, [2018 – 19]

13
HURDLES IN TODAY’S MARKET
• Well established PV market
• Few manufacturing challenges
• Known for being impractical
• Comparatively higher initial investment

NBN SSoE, T. E. (Mechanical), Seminar – 2015 Course, [2018 – 19]

14
FEATURE OF SOLAR STIRLING
ENGINE
• Environmental Friendly
• Quiet operation
• No need of new transmission lines
• Comparatively longer life
• Cheap electricity generation
• Minimum Maintenance
• Digital display
• Easy to implement
• More utilization of sunlight due to the solar
tracker
NBN SSoE, T. E. (Mechanical), Seminar – 2015 Course, [2018 – 19]
15
Applications
• Electrical power generation
• Portable water production
• Water pumping
• Other applications

NBN SSoE, T. E. (Mechanical), Seminar – 2015 Course, [2018 – 19]

16
ADVANTAGES
• The silence of operation
• The high efficiency
• The multitude of possible “hot sources”
• Reliability and easy maintenance
• The very diverse uses

NBN SSoE, T. E. (Mechanical), Seminar – 2015 Course, [2018 – 19]

17
DISADVANTAGES
• The variety of models
• The problems of sealing
• Heat transfers
• The lack of flexibility

NBN SSoE, T. E. (Mechanical), Seminar – 2015 Course, [2018 – 19]

18
CONCLUSION
• The new era in harvesting solar energy
has begun.
• It is just a matter of time before these
engines become a very potential source of
solar electricity.
• Many countries have already invested in
this technology and are reaping the twin
benefits of nation development and
environmental fortification.
