Introduction
• Information technologies have become an integral part of our
society.

• If analysts’ prognostications are correct, just about every

physical object we see (e.g. clothes, cars, trains, etc.) will also
be connected to the decade (Internet of Things).

• This market forecast will surely spur the growth in mobile traffic
with current predictions suggesting a 1000x increase over the
next decade.

0G Technology: The first generation of technology is a mobile radio

telephone called 0 (Zero) Generation telephone system includes
transceiver, dial, display and handset. It is also called Radio Common
Carrier (RCC) .

1G Technology: In 1980, the analog telecommunication system was

included in telephone technology which was introduced as 1G
technology. This technology has just an analog system with
bandwidth up to 30kHz.

2G Technology: The digital communication system came into the

market with 2G technology which makes spectral bandwidth possible
up to 200kHz and SMS services among cellular phone users. GSM
and CDMA are two systems of 2Gtechnology. The text messaging

2.5G Technology: This technology includes a GPRS system with a

packet data internet service. The MMS and mobile internet with
WAP (Wireless Application Protocol) are the new features of 2.5G
technology.

2.75G Technology: The GPRS system with EDGE (Enhanced Data rates
for GSM Evolution) feature was possible because of 2.75 Technology
that starts the advance technology in GSM internet system.

3G Technology: High speed internet on mobile, video calls and mobile

TV are new features of 3G technology. 3GPP is a group of CDMA2000
and UMTS which broadcast internet speed up to 2 MBPS with high
data rate. 3.5G and 3.75G technologies are something like 3G
technology and includes features similar to a 3G system.

Goals of 5G

 1000 times higher mobile data volume per area

 10 to 100 times higher typical user data rate

 10 to 100 times higher number of connected devices

 10 times longer battery life for low-power devices

 5 times reduced end-to-end (E2E)latency, reaching a target of 5

ms for road safety applications.
Challenges & Key Performance Indicators

 The key challenge is to meet these goals at a similar cost and

energy consumption as today’s networks From the point of
view of METIS, a complete redesign of the Internet is discarded.

 In this challenging task, the METIS project has defined a set of

five essential Horizontal Topics (HTs) to be consolidated
into a single 5G system concept. These HTs are: Direct Device-to-
Device Communications (D2D), Massive Machine
Communications(MMC), Moving Networks(MN) and Ultra–Dense
Networks (UDN), and Ultra-Reliable Communications (URC).
Roadmap for 5G

 The fifth generation (5G) mobile communication networks will

require a major paradigm shift to satisfy the increasing demand for
higher data rates, lower network latencies, better energy
efficiency, and reliable ubiquitous connectivity. With prediction of
the advent of 5G systems in the near future, many efforts and
revolutionary ideas have been proposed and explored around the
world.

 The major technological breakthroughs that will bring renaissance

to wireless communication networks include:

 a wireless software-defined network

 network function virtualization

 millimeter wave spectrum

 massive MIMO

 network ultra-densification
Cont…

 big data and mobile cloud computing

 Scalable IOT

 device-to-device connectivity with high mobility

 green communications

 new radio access techniques
