Second Law of Motion

Third Law of Motion
Sir Isaac Newton was born
a premature.

True or False
TRUE. Newton was born prematurely and
he was so small at the time of his birth that
some thought that he would not survive.
Newton’s father Isaac Newton, Sr. died
three months before Newton was born.
Group Activity on
Phet Simulation:
Forces and Motion
Activity 1:
Net Force
Activity #1 Net Force
Questions:
1. How can you make the blue side win?
By increasing the amount of blue men
2. How can you make the red side win?
By increasing the amount of red men
3. How can you get a tie on both sides?
By having the same amount of men on each side.
4.If there was only one man pulling the cart what
would the sum of forces consist of?
It consist of the amount of force exerted by a man.
Activity 2:
Motion
Activity #2 Motion
Questions:
5. Press the play button. Count to ten, what
happens? (Look at the speedometer)
answers may vary
6. Repeat steps 4 and 5 with the refrigerator. (look at
the speedometer)
Compared with the 50 kg box, the speed becomes
slower.
9. What happens to the speed, does it slow down as
different objects are added and the applied force is
different?
The massive an object becomes slower the speed.
The greater the force, the faster the speed of an
object.
10. Why do you think this happens?
Force is directly proportional to mass and speed.
11. If forces are balanced, then the net force is zero.
Is there a sum of forces, or net force here?
No because the forces are balanced.
Activity 3:
Acceleration
Newton is a scientist and not a
mathematician.

True or False
FALSE. Newton is not just a scientist
as we all know. He was also a
mathematician, and a natural
philosopher. Newton is one of the top
mathematicians of his day.
Activity #3 Acceleration
Questions:
a. How do you make the box speed up?
I make the box speed up by increasing the
amount of force.
b. How do you make the box move at a
constant speed?
I make the box move at a constant speed by
having the same amount of applied force and
frictional force.
Once the box is moving how do you make it stop?
It will stop, by not exerting an applied force.
Once the box is moving how do you make it change
direction?
By applying an additional external force in
different direction of the motion.
c. Describe the motion the box undergoes when you
make it change direction.
The motion is said to be accelerating.
2) When does the box accelerate?
When there is a change in speed, direction or both.
3) What is the acceleration of each item?

5m/s 2

10m/s 2
4) a) How do you find force? (State the equation using
words).
Force is equal to mass times acceleration
b) How do you find acceleration? (State the equation
using words).
Acceleration equals force divided by mass
c) How do you find mass? (State the equation using
words).
Mass is Force divided by acceleration
5) How much force would the orange man need to use
2
for the 200kg fridge to accelerate at 5 m/s ?
1, 000 Newton or 1, 000 kg/m/s 2
He died on March 20, 1727 at
the age of 84.

True or False
TRUE. He died on March 20, 1727
at the age of 84. Newton was buried
in Westminster Abbey, the first
scientist to be so honored.
