Mechanical properties

• Ductility is a measure of the degree of plastic deformation

that has been sustained at fracture.

• Hardness is the property of material to withstand surface

deformation like abrasion, scratch, denting etc.

• Resilience is the capacity of a material to absorb energy when

it is deformed elastically and then, upon unloading, to have
this energy recovered

• Toughness is a measure of the ability of a material to absorb

energy up to fracture.
Destructive Testing methods
Lagre deformation, high % Breaks before yielding, no
elongation, prominent necking, necking, little deformation
large RA, cup & cone fracture
Nature of fracture
BHN is not independent of load.
Load has a definite relationship with diameter of indenter.
Used for materials having hardness beyond the scope of Brinell testing (softer materials)
Charpy Impact test
Izod impact test
Long testing time
Fatigue

Fatigue: Deformation under cyclic loading

Endurance limit: No. of cycles a material can withstand
before failure
