What is Work?

• Taken from dictionary

(verb) - “be engaged in physical or mental activity in order to


achieve a purpose or result, especially in one's job.”

(noun) - “mental or physical activity as a means of earning


income; employment.”

(noun) - “something done or made”


History & Evolution of Work

• The first human: Adam & Eve


Letting go all heaven “perks”; working to survive living in the world
• Hunters & Gatherers (earlier than 10,000 B.C.)
Individual contribution; sole objective for survival
• Agricultural
Grow plants & tame animals; the rise of ruling & working class
Crops surplus support the lives of artisans & craftsmen
• 1st Industrial revolution (17th century)
Slowly eliminated the association between work with sweat, muscle & time
Key inventions: steam power; enabling the first factory & mass production
Rich became richer, poor became poorer

• 2nd Industrial Revolution (end of 19th century)


Steam power make ways to electricity, oil, transportation, communication
Demand for equality through labor union
• 3rd Industrial Revolution (starting 1960s)
The rise of electronics: transistors  microprocessors  computers
Increased leisure times create new jobs
• 4th Industrial (Digital) revolution (2000s)
Technology-based; mental labor replacing physical labor. Computers are everywhere.
Computers are as smart as the one designed them.
Knowledge economy: huge reliance on networks and connections.
Work motivation comes from “creating a difference”.
Type of Workers

• A product of inner personal drive (value, personality,


motivation) & interaction (environment).
• Impact attitude & behaviors (both seen and unseen)
• Knowing types of people working around you can help your
strategy to adapt & deal with them.
• Personality may bring significant influence, creating additional
“homework” for HR to perform the right placement.

• Computers are continuously becoming smarter, faster and
cheaper; requiring less human intervention.
• Human will see their jobs replaced by computers
• Some industry migrate faster than others; potentially requiring
zero human intervention
