America After World War I

• 1919 crazy year- strikes, race riots, Red Scare, economy

struggled  people blamed Europe, immigrants and Wilson
• Warren G. Harding  “return to normalcy” lower taxes, less
gov. regulation, no League of Nations
• Congress passed Fordney-McCumber Tariff to help economy
after war  set highest taxes on foreign goods which helped US
businesses
Main Idea- Harding offered lower taxes and less regulation to
help economy grow

Mixed Industrial Success

• Lowering income tax rates and cheap fuel helped economy

• Ford’s assembly lines made cars faster and cheaper
• Unable to buy all these new goods people bought using credit
and installment buying (debt)
• Problems  monopolies became problems again  higher
prices, better farm machinery meant cheap food, income gap
grew
Main Idea: lower taxes mean people have more money, cars
accessable, people went into debt, had to pay higher prices
Coolidge Takes Over
• Harding’s cabinet corrupt ex. Teapot Dome where oil executives
bribed Albert Fall to buy gov. land
• Harding embarrassed to death  Calvin Coolidge new president
• Coolidge wanted to clean up gov
• Believed in laissez-faire economics = less gov. regulation = better business
• Gov shouldn’t help with social and economic problems
• Useful appliances and shorter work hours = more leisure (free)
time  went to see movies, listen to radio and sports
• Not everyone doing better = farmers, African Americans and
minorities were more limited
Main Idea: Coolidge had to clean up gov. to make his party look
better https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=XjL-uE4lSvI
