INTRODUCTION ON MICROWAVES
 Frequency : 1 GHz to 300GHz Wavelength : 30 cm to 1 mm

 Definition : Microwaves are a type of electromagnetic waves just like

ultraviolet radiation, radio waves, gamma rays and x-rays.

 Applications: Communication, Cell Phones, Cooking, Radar, etc.

MICROWAVE IN CELLPHONES
 Mobile phones emit and receive radio
and microwave radiation in the range of
800 to 2600 MHz
 The cell phone establishes a wireless
connection using electromagnetic
waves of the nearest cell tower creating
a two way connection .
 A cell phone receives microwave signals
from the closest transmitter then sends
a microwave signal back.
 Certain microwave radiation
wavelengths pass through the Earth's
atmosphere and can be used to
transmit information to and from
satellites in orbit.
HEALTH RISKS DUE TO CELL PHONE
RADIATIONS
 Scientists have reported adverse health
effects of using mobile phones
including changes in brain activity,
reaction times, and sleep patterns, eye
vision problems.

 Excessive use of mobile phones may

also lead to brain cancer.

 Excessive use of mobile phones may

lead to the formation of such brain
tumors as glioma and acoustic

for Research on Cancer (IARC)
classified mobile phone  When mobile phones are used very
radiation is possibly close to some medical devices
carcinogenic, means that (including pacemakers, implantable
there “COULD BE SOME RISK” defibrillators, and certain hearing aids)
there is the possibility of causing
interference with their operation.
HEALTH RISKS DUE TO CELL PHONE
RADIATIONS
 The high frequency of cell phone use
can have negative effects on our stress
levels.

 When slouching over a cell phone for

a couple of hours per day, we ruin our
neck and back muscles.

 Adults and especially children can

suffer the long-term effects of
radiation waves on the brain.

 Overall, excessive cell phone use can

be a risk factor for mental health
issues in young adults.

 Phantom pocket vibration: feeling

that our cell phone is vibrating in our
bag when actually it’s not.
HOW DO THE
CELLPHONES
AFFECT OUR
BRAIN?
EFFECTS OF CELL PHONE RADIATIONS
ON OUR BRAIN
 A cell phone is a two-way
microwave radio with
intermittent and destabilizing
pulses at much greater power.

 The weak and erratic microwave

radiation from cell phones and
tablets cannot directly break the
bonds that hold molecules
together, but it does disrupt
DNA, weaken the brain’s
protective barrier, and release
highly reactive and damaging
free radicals.

 Exposure to mobile phone

radiation could have a negative
effect on the development of
80% of the absorbed radiation comes memory performance in specific
from holding the phone to the head. brain regions in adolescents.
EFFECTS OF CELL PHONE RADIATIONS
ON OUR BRAIN
• More negative impact of radiation if
the phone was held to the right hand
side of the head. That's where the
areas of the brain related to memory
are located.

• Researchers have found that people

who use their phones a lot –
particularly after "lights out" – have
disrupted sleeping patterns, and are
"a lot more tired" which affects the
brain activity.

• They also found that just 50 min. of

exposure to cell phone radiation in
adult males directly alters the
production of glucose – the brain’s
main fuel.
EFFECTS OF CELL PHONE RADIATIONS
ON ANIMALS
 Animals exposed to electromagnetic
fields can suffer a deterioration of
health and changes in behavior.

 Frequent deaths in domestic animals;

such as, hamsters and guinea pigs,
living near mobile telecommunication
base stations have been witnessed.

 The activity of Bats is significantly

reduced in habitats exposed to
electromagnetic field strength greater
than 2 V/m.

 Insects and Amphibians which are

important components of ecosystem
and reliable bio-indicators, are very
sensitive to ultraviolet (UV) radiation.
EFFECTS OF CELL PHONE RADIATIONS
ON ANIMALS
 Ornithologists assert that one would
never see a sparrow, pigeon, or any
bird flying or staying near the cell
tower, the reason being increased
absorption of radiation.

 Millions of migratory birds die each

year from collisions with
telecommunication masts.

 Birds are believed to be using earth's

magnetic field for navigation, and get
severely disoriented by the microwave
radiation from telecommunication
masts.

Albert Einstein had said, ‘‘If the bee disappears from the surface of the
earth, man would have no more than four years to live.”
PRECAUTIONARY
MEASURES
 Cell phone radiations disrupt
melatonin production

 Flight mode turns off the

wireless transmitter thereby
reducing exposure to radiation
fields.

 If you hold the phone 2 inches

away, the signal is about 1/4th
the original strength.
At 4 inches away, it’s about
1/16th

 In a moving vehicle, cell phone

antenna is constantly scanning
for contact. Thus, Radiation
emissions increases
PRECAUTIONARY
MEASURES
 Always position the keypad
toward your body and the back
away from your body to help
direct the electromagnetic
fields away from you.

 SAR: Specific Absorption Rate,

a measure of the amount of
radio frequency energy
absorbed by the body when
using a mobile phone.

 SAR cannot exceed 1.6 watts

per kilogram

OBJECTIVES OF SELECTING THE TOPIC

TOPIC: Cell Phone : Invisible Hazards in the wireless age

• Cell phones are mostly used by the majority of the population worldwide.
• Although knowing that its harmful Cell phones are being used. We need to
aware people about the harmful effects of cell phone on not only humans
but also on the entire ecosystem.
• People should also be prone to the solutions to atleast minimize the
problems.
