LESSON Define the

OUTCOMES concept of
derivative
INTRODUCTION
• Calculus is the mathematics of change, and the primary
tool for studying change is a procedure called
differentiation (derivatives).

• Derivative
– derived a function.
– study on how one quantity changes in relation to
another quantity.

• The derivatives of function f (x) study on how f (x) changes

in relation to changes in x.
• Differentiation is all about finding rates of change of one
quantity compared to another.
• The process of finding a derivative is called
differentiation.
• The most common notations for the derivative are:

dy
y' f '( x)
dx

Slope of a straight line
How to find the slope of a curve?

The slope keep changing, that is why the

knowledge of derivative (limit concept) come.
A secant line is a straight line joining two points
on a function.

A tangent line to a curve at a given point is the

straight line that "just touches" the curve at that
point
When QP, then x  0
Hence, the secant line  tangent line

f ( x  x)  f ( x)
m  f ( x)  lim
x  0 x
Definition
Differentiation using first principle

• The derivative of the function f (x ) with respect to the

variable x is the function f ' ( x ) where

f ( x  h)  f ( x )
f ' ( x)  lim
h 0 h

provided the limit exist.

• The process of finding the derivative using the above
definition is called differentiation with first principle.
5 steps of differentiation with first principle

Step 1 • Write an expression for f ( x)

Step 2 • Write an expression for f ( x  h)

• Substitute f ( x) and f ( x  h) into the

Step 3 formula

Step 4 • Simplify the expression

f ( x  h)  f ( x )
Step 5 • Evaluate f ( x)  lim
h 0 h
Differentiation using first principle
