AUTOMATED

BICYCLE
Introduction
 An Automated bicycle is a engine powered bike

, the bikes can be more easily carried into buildings, on

public transportation (facilitating mixed-mode
commuting and bike commuting), and more easily stored
in compact living quarters or aboard a car, boat or plane.

Transportation has been the most important issue to be

dealt with on the present day situation as commuting from
place to place in the city has become an expensive task.
DESIGN OF HINGE AND FRAME

It was found that almost all the

bikes have a very similar frame
design and folding mechanism.
The feasible ones i.e. the ones
that were having proper
ergonomics and were easy to
manufacture were selected for
comparison.
The bike frame concepts
developed were based on the
ergonomics of the convention
bike frame.
MATERIAL SELECTION

After long sessions of discussion, it was finalized to use the

standard material used in conventional bikes i.e. Mild steel. Mild
steel is easily available in the required diameter and length and is
also not expensive. One main advantage of using mild steel is that it
is easy to fabricate with it as welding of mild steel is by arc welding
process which is cheap compared to SSRG International Journal of
Mechanical Engineering (SSRG-IJME). Use of other materials like of
aluminum was not selected as the availability is less and also the
fabrication cost is high.

DEMONSTRATION COST
The expected cost of the materials used for the frame would be
around 10,000 INR but for the purpose of mass production the cost
will reduce further remarkably.

Parts of Bike

Bearing: a device that facilitates rotation by reducing friction

Engine: An engine or motor is a machine designed to convert one form

of energy into mechanical energy.

Bicycle : A bicycle, also called a cycle or bike, is a human-powered or motor-powered,

pedal-driven, single-track vehicle, having two wheels attached to a frame, one behind
the other
Components

Chain: a system of interlinking pins, plates and rollers that transmits power
from the front sprocket(s) to the rear sprocket(s) rear fork ends

Frame: the mechanical core of a bike, the frame provides points of

attachment for the various components that make up the machine. The
term is variously construed, and can refer to the base section, always
including the bottom bracket, or to base frame, fork, and suspension
components such as a shock absorber

Saddle or Seat: what a bicyclist sits on

Seat stay: frame components, small diameter tubes running from top of
seat tube to rear dropouts.

CONCLUSION

• The design of these bicycle was based on the standard

data available. The fabrication was done using locally
available materials. Compared to the foldable bicycles
existing in the market, our bicycle is economical and
occupies less space. The weight of our bicycle is with
par with light weight bicycles available in the market,
though the material used for fabrication is mild steel.
The bicycle has adjustable seat and handle positions
enabling both children and adults to use the same
bicycle. Though the bicycle is foldable, sleek and having
small wheels, complete justice is done to the
ergonomics of the rider hence making it comfortable.
