Unemployment
➢ Unemployment or joblessness is a
situation in which the able bodied
people who are looking for a job
cannot find a job.
➢ The condition of not being able to
find sustainable paid work.When
skilled labour is competing for jobs
because of less demand for labour or
excess supply of labour, and a large
fails to find jobs in an country.
Measurement of Unemployment rate
The unemployment rate is a measure of the prevalence of
unemployment. It is expressed as a percentage, and is calculated as
follows:

Unemployment In India: Rising At
Alarming Rate
❏ As per the CMIE report released in January 2019, about 11
million people lost their jobs in 2018.
❏ Mainly due to the aftermath effects of demonetization of high-
value Indian currencies in the fag end of 2016, the new job
opportunities in India has almost dried up.
❏ The subsequent topsy-turvy launch of the new goods and
services tax (GST) in early 2017 has destroyed millions of small
businesses, resulting in worst time for job seekers.
Unemployment Rate In India 2019: Highest In Last
2 Years
❖ According to the latest CMIE data, the present rate of
unemployment in India is about 7.2% in February 2019, the highest
ever since September 2016.
❖ Exactly a year back, in February 2018, the unemployment rate in
India was hovering just 5.9%.
❖ According to Trading Economics Data, India witnessed a sudden
jump in the unemployment rate in 2018, from just 3.52% in 2017.
❖ Between February 2017 and February 2019, the number of
employed people declined to 400 million from 407 million.
