MATRICES
A Matrix is a two-dimensional arrangement of
numbers in rows and columns enclosed by a pair
of square brackets:

6 4 24
A = 1

WHAT ARE THEY FOR?
• Matrices are used to describe:
1. linear equations
2. tracking of coefficients of linear
transformations
3. record data that depend on multiple
parameters

• They can be added, subtracted, multiplied, and

decomposed in various ways, which makes them a
key concept in the field of linear algebra.
ADDITION
APPLICATION OF ADDITION
• To add two matrices, just add the numbers in the
matching positions:

• The calculations are:

3 + 4 = 7 / 8 + 0 = 8
4 + 1 = 5 / 6 – 9 = - 3
• The two matrices must be the same size.
• The rows must match in size and columns must match
in size as well.
WHAT IF THERE IS A NEGATIVE MATRIX?
• Simple algebra, negative to positive equals
negative and negative to negative equals
positive:

• The calculations are:

- (2) = - 2 / - (- 4) = 4
- (7) = - 7 / - (10) = - 10
SUBTRACTIO
N
APPLICATION OF SUBTRACTION
• To subtract two matrices, just subtract the numbers
in the matching positions:

• The calculations are:

3 – 4 = - 1 / 8 – 0 = 8
4 – 1 = 3 / 6 – (- 9) = - 15
• Subtracting is actually defined as the addition of a
negative matrix: A + (- B)
