Good agricultural practices (GAP)

• Specific methods which, when applied to agriculture,

create food for consumers or further processing that is
safe and wholesome
• There are numerous competing definitions of what
methods constitute good agricultural practice thereare
several broadly accepted schemes that producers can
adhere to

GAPS IN LIVESTOCK
HOUSING
• Animal Welfare is at the heart of GAPsinLivestock
housing
– Ensure animals are free from pain, injury anddisease
– freedom from hunger andthirst;
– freedom from discomfort;
– freedom from pain,
– injury or disease;
– freedom to express normal behavior;
– and freedom from fear anddistress
Contd.
• Avoid negative impacts on
• landscape, environment and life:
• contamination of land for grazing, food, water and air
• Check stocks and flows, maintain structure of systems
• Design and construct buildings to be free ofobstructions
and hazards
• Where relevant, provide adequate space allowances and
clean bedding
• Protect animals from adverse weather conditions andthe
consequences thereof

CONT
D.
• Provide housed animals with adequate ventilation
• Provide non-slippery floors
• Good sanitary conditions
• Have secure boundaries/fencing
– Contain animals appropriately toensure there is no risk of disease
spread between farms and within farms
• Restrict access to an ‘as needs’ basis and put inplace
appropriate processes to minimize diseasespread
• Use protective clothing and footwear and keep recordsof
all visitors asappropriate

Contd.
• Have an appropriate waste management system
• Ensure wastes are stored to minimize therisk of
environmental pollution
• Waste storage areas for example: manure heapsand
slurry stores, should be sited appropriately.
• Regularly inspect permanent slurry stores and manure
heaps for signs of leaks and impending structural failure
to minimize the risk of runoff polluting the environment.
• Ensure other wastes such as plastic silage wrap are
disposed of appropriately to prevent pollution of the
environment.

WASTE AND POLLUTION MANAGEMENT, RECYCLINGAND RE-USE
TAKE HOME
MESSAGE
• Ensure overall appearance of the livestock operationis
appropriate for a facility in which high-quality food is
harvested
– access roads to their farms and the farm surroundings are clean,
– sheds are correctly maintained and
– that access roads used by cattle are free of effluent
GLOBAL G A P IS A GLOBAL
ORGANIZATION WITH A CRUCIAL
OBJECTIVE:
SAFE, SUSTAINABLE
AGRICULTURE
WORLDWIDE. SET
VOLUNTARY
They set standards for the
certification of agricultural products around
the globe–and more and more producers,
suppliers and buyers are harmonizing their
certification standards to match.

HOW TO GET GLOBALG.A.P. CERTIFIED
FOODCHAIN
Standard requirement

• Food Safety
• Environmental Protection
• Occupational Health,
• Safety and Welfare
• Animal Welfare
• Quality Management System (Option 2)
Global G A P Sub Scope: Calf/Young Beef
• This sub-scope is built on modules in theAll Farm,
Livestock and Ruminant Bases.
• It’s designed for auditing, veal and young beefproduction,
including the inspection and validation of all critical and
sensitive animal welfare issues
5 STEPS TO GET
CERTIFIED
1. Download the relevant GLOBALG.A.P. Standard Documents and
Checklists from our document center.
2. Compare offers from the certification bodies in your country,
register with the one you choose and get your GLOBALG.A.P.
Number (GGN).
3. Carry out a self-assessment using the checklist and correct all
the points you don’t complywith.
4. Arrange an appointment with your GLOBALG.A.P. approved
certification body. An inspector will then conduct the first on-
site inspection.
5. Once you successfully comply with the standard’s requirements,
you will receive a GLOBALG.A.P. Integrated Farm Assurance
Standard certificate for the relevant Version and Scope which is
valid for one year.
SITEINSPECTION
• Identifying the production units is necessary to indicate where agricultural
activitieshave taken place or are due to takeplace.
• Records on agricultural activities require naming the respective
production unit.
WORKER
SAFETY
• Producers are required to provide workers witha clean
place to safely store
– their food, designated areas to eat and drink,
– and access to potable drinking water.
• When designating this/these area(s), producers must
ensure that there is no risk ofcontamination.
• The workers’ food should not contaminate the certified
product nor should the production activity contaminate
the workers’ food.
• In addition to the rest area, producers must also provide
hand-washing facilities

WORKER
SAFETY
• If workers live on the site, their living quarters must be
habitable with
– sound roof, windows anddoors.
– Running water, drains and toilets must beprovided.
– Where drains are not possible, septic pits may be acceptedwhen
they comply with localregulations.

Food Security
• Control of physical access to thepremises
• Sign-in procedures for all visitors to the site
• Information on all theemployees and subcontractors
must be available.
• There are many ways to manage potential threats. The
inspector must consider and evaluate any suitable
method the producer is applying to take action against
intentional threat.
• Food defense covers all aspects of the farm and not only
the packing facility.
