Introduction
• The Central Asia-South Asia power project, commonly known by the
acronym CASA-1000, is a $1.16 billion project currently under
construction that will allow for the export of surplus hydroelectricity
from Tajikistan and Kyrgyzstan to Pakistan and Afghanistan
• Transmission lines are designed to transmit 1,300 MW of electricity,
with Afghanistan allotted 300 MW of electricity and Pakistan 1000
MW of electricity. Initially, however, Pakistan will receive 700 MW,
while Afghanistan will be supplied 300 MW

Introduction
 High Voltage (HV) transmission lines are more efficient than Low
Voltage (LV) transmission line
 VSC (voltage source converters) based HVDC systems are force-
commutated with insulated-gate bipolar transistor (IGBT)
 VSC converter technology can rapidly control both active and
reactive power independently
 VSC based HVDC is the best option for long underground and
underwater transmission
 With reduced size, cost and improved reliability of Power
Electronics, converters have made HVDC transmission more
widespread.

Advance Control Strategies
For high performance electrical systems following control
strategies are used by the researchers

• Synchronous reference frame(SRF)

• Direct Torque Control (DTC)

• Finite Set Model Predictive

Control (FS-MPC)

10
Synchronous Reference Frame
Uses linear controllers and a Pulse Width Modulator (PWM) to generate the
voltages

Advantages
• Widely applied in power electronics, due to its high performance at both steady
and transient states
• Allows active and reactive power to be decoupled and controlled independently
to achieve a dynamic performance
• Faster dynamic response due to use of the PI current regulator

11
Problem statement
• Conventional HVDC transmission employs line-commutated current
(LCC)-source converters with thyristor valves

• LCC converters require a relatively strong synchronous voltage source

in order to commutate

• The conversion process demands high reactive power from filters

12
13
Aims and objectives
• Compensation of Harmonics and reactive power

• Design of inverter

• Controlling power quality in DC transmission lines

14
What is HVDC Transmission?
1. Electricity is taken from an AC power network, converted to DC
2. It is then converted back to AC in another converter station and injected into the
receiving AC network.
