TYPE FIRE SUPPRESSION

Inert Gases

Inert gas agents are electrically non-conductive clean fire

suppressants that are used in design concentrations of 35-50% by
volume to reduce ambient oxygen concentration to between 14 and
10%. Oxygen concentrations below 14% will not support the
combustion of most fuels (and human exposure must be limited).
Several gases and mixtures are available commercially.

Halocarbons

A number of fire extinguishing halocarbon gases with

zero ozone depletion potential (ODP) have been
developed. These include both HFCs
(hydrofluorocarbons) and PFCs Perfluorocarbons).

 ADVANTAGES
 CLEAN, DRY, PROVEN, GASEOUS,
ELECTRICALLY NON-CONDUCTIVE
 Has probably extinguished, without
incident, more fires than any other
gaseous agent.

 DISADVANTAGE:
 DANGER OF ASPHYXIATION in confined
spaces

Mode of Operation
 How does Novec™1230 extinguish a fire ?
Novec 1230 fluid extinguishes The Fire Tetrahedron
principally by removing heat from Chain Reaction
the fire.
Upon discharge, Novec 1230 fluid
creates a gaseous mixture with air.
This agent/air mixture has a heat
capacity much greater than that of
air alone. A higher heat capacity
means that this gas mixture will Heat
absorb more energy (heat) for each Fuel
degree of temperature change it
experiences.*

How Does Novec 1230 Fluid Work?

• Heat of vaporization is 25 times less than water.

• Vapor pressure is 12 times that of water.
• Energy discharging through pipe and nozzle causes vaporization.
• Vaporization within 3-4 ft. of the
nozzle
• Room design concentration is
quickly reached
What Novec™1230?
Stored as a liquid
Turns into gas upon discharge

• easy transportation
• low heat of vap (95 kJ/kg@
(plastic container)
25C) and high vp (.404 bar
• Can be bulk shipped by air @ 25C)
• special nozzle design
