What is Multilingual

A multilingual website is any website that offers content in more than one language.

The information displayed in different languages is often the same, but may be tailored
for different audiences

Multilingualism is becoming a social phenomenon governed by the needs of

globalization and cultural openness. It helps in promoting a need to acquire additional
languages

Static content in TMI
 Static contents in a webpage are the ones that are delivered to the user exactly
as stored

Dynamic Contents in TMI
 Dynamic contents are the ones which are generated by table values, external
system data

Reports in TMI
 Reports are generated dynamically when the user clicks links to retrieve some
information in detail.
 Reports come under dynamic content which holds detailed information

Bottleneck in TMI - DB Side
Updating or Inserting dynamic contents in DB involves change in the existing query
for languages such as Chinese, Arabic etc. This is not feasible to implement.

Usage of separate tables for each language results in too many number of new
tables to be created in DB. This may affect the performance of the application

Usage of an additional column to denote language in all the existing tables will
increase the number of records per table.

The text should be converted to desired language before inserting into DB tables.
This type of conversion is not feasible.

Table which supports XML format or UTF-8 is needed and it is not feasible to
implement Multilingual for such data.

Data tables of TMI are loaded by various means such as Mainframe jobs, Data
Stage tool and other data loaders. Translating these types of data tables is not
feasible 15

Bottleneck in TMI - PDF Side

Generation of PDF using FOP will be complex because of

translation process involved

PDF text alignment, style, look and feel issues should be

handled separately for each language

To resolve the issues of FOP, ITEXT PDF Generator can be

used and POC has to be done to verify the same

Risk and Assumptions
Risks
 Dynamic contents related changes affects DB querying.
 Risk in acquiring DB which supports UTF-8 and XML related conversions.
 Web Service which has to be updated based on the request that is sent and response that is
received.
 Translating PDF contents based on language Selection.
 Design related issues like alignment, applying style properties, look and feel problems.
 Risks in converting the data from tables which are loaded through other external systems.
Assumptions
 Eradicating issues pertaining to look and feel, Implementing Multilingual for Static contents is
feasible.
 Implementing Multilingual for DB contents, Web Service requests/response are not feasible.
 Displaying the data from tables, which are loaded through mainframe job, ETL data stage loading
and BW techniques are not applicable as we may not be able to convert from java side. Hence
these conversions are not feasible to implement.
 Research has to be done on how to implement the translation for PDF contents, using ITEXT PDF
Generator.

Existing example
 We have an existing example from “ parts.cat.com”, where the dynamic contents from DB are
converted to the different language based on the user selection

 Following are the steps involved in parts.cat.com page

Static contents are directly loaded from the page where it is hardcoded

Dynamic contents are taken initially, converted and stored in DB

Dynamic values are converted to XML format for the “Apache Solr ” tool

The tool fetches the concerned data and finally displays it in the respective UI page

Summary
Multilingualism helps in promoting a need to acquire additional languages and helps in
business development

Some of the advantages of implementing multilingual are Customer Satisfaction,

Competition and International Approach

Successful implementation of multilingual for one language may subsequently save

time, effort and cost as the same logic is applied for the other languages.

Implementing Multilingual for Static contents is feasible.

Implementing Multilingual for Dynamic Contents is not feasible and it can affect
dynamic contents from DB. It may also affect the look and feel of the application.

Summary - Contd..
While generating PDF, we may face issue with regard to the words getting interchanged. POC
has to be done for implementing the ITEXT PDF generator.

XML format or UTF-8 supporting DB is required to store the translated contents. This
architectural change might affect the performance of the application, hence it is not feasible
to implement.

Applying Multilingual for Web Service request/response involves change in architecture and it
is not feasible.

Multilingual cannot be implemented for Data tables which are loaded through other external
systems(mainframe job, ETL data stage loading and BW techniques) and it is not feasible.

Eradicating Alignment, look and feel changes, Implementing Multilingual for Static Contents
is feasible.
