INTELLIGENT

TRANSPORT SYSTEM
ITS (INTELLIGENT TRANSPORT
SYSTEM)
 DEFINITION-

1) Application of advanced technology to transportation

solutions.

2) ITS applies advanced technologies of electronics,

communication , control and sensing and detecting in all kinds of
transportation system in order to improve safety, efficiency and
service and traffic situation through transmitting real time
information.
OBJECTIVES OF ITS
• To improve traffic safety
• To relieve traffic congestion
• To improve transportation efficiency
• To reduce air pollution
• To promote the development of related
industries (provides better services to travel ,
Improves operation efficiency)
BACKGROUND SITUATION OF
PROMOTING ITS

 To solve problems caused by road

 To reduce drivers run
 To reach an advanced communication society
PROBLEMS
 Traffic congestion
 Fuel consumption
 Road accidents
PURPOSE
O Safe - (speed detection , wrong way and
congestion)
O Pro active - (give information before signal,
when speed of vehicle is too fast)
O Connected – (vehicle to vehicle and vehicle
to pedestrian)
O Distributed – (work is distributed)
O Environment friendly
BENEFITS

 Time savings
 Better emergency response within time and
services
 Environment benefits
 Decreasing of probability of congestion
occurrence
SYSTEMS OF ITS
• ITS classified into five system according to their function-
1) ATMS (Advanced transport management system)
2) ATIS (Advanced transport information system)
3) AVCSS (Advanced vehicle control and safety system)
4) APTS (Advanced public transportation system)
5) CVO (Commercial vehicle operation)
1) ATMS – It detects traffic situations and transmit
to control communication network and then
develops traffic control strategies from
information such as signal control, speed control
and toll collection.
2) ATIS – It can access real time information in the
car, at home and in the office and includes
internet connection, telephone, fax, cable
television and mobile.
3) AVCSS – It applies advanced technologies in
vehicle and roads and helps drivers control
vehicles in order to reduce accidents and
improve traffic safety.
4) APTS – It applies technologies of ATMS, ATIS and AVCSS in public
transportation in order to improve the quality of service and increase
efficiency.

5) CVO – It applies the technologies of ATMS, ATIS AND AVCSS in

commercial vehicle operation such as trucks, buses, taxes and ambulances
in order to improve efficiency and safety.
Some other system of ITS
O Traffic flow system
O Collision prevention system
O Surrounding vehicle detection system
O Vehicle classification system
O Parking information system
CHALLENGES
O End user – provides information to vehicle
drivers
O Big data – in developed country, there is
huge number of cars and big data so
communicate to every car and to every
pedestrian is big challenge
O Security – nobody can hack the system of
ITS
ISSUES AND CHALLENGES OF ITS IN
INDIA
 Rapid growth in no of vehicles
 Lack of technology
 Raise in fuel rates
 ITS should not have barriers to
make
 It has to upgrade as to the public
need
 The use of ITS in some developed
countries like America, Japan, and
England and developing country
like India helped them in their
economic progress.
