Since it is beginning of our English digital classes, the objective of this activity is to
check the students’ background knowledge of the English language. Work with
English loanwords present in our language and in our daily lives. Use some texts
(oral, written and pictorial) to show common English language expressions. The idea
is to work with the use, the meaning and the sounds of language. (Extra activity at
the end of the presentation.)

To point out the role of the English language in the world, you can first use a world
map (a big poster) to show your students countries where the language is spoken.
Name the countries in English and make it a moment for deductive input. Then you
can make a question such as ‘What do people use English for?’ and elicit ideas.
Students will answer in their mother tongue but you can summarize their contributions
in English, writing some of them on the board.
FYI: English is the main language of books, newspapers, airports and air-traffic control,
international business and academic conferences, science, technology, diplomacy, sport,
international competitions, pop music and advertising

get some information about them: name, occupation, and then the nationality. Who’s
she? Is she a singer? Is she an actress? Is she from the USA? Is she American?
(Yes/no questions) Who is he? Is he an actor too? Is he American? Write the words
on the board. Give more examples: Shakira (Colombian), Hugh Jackman (Australian)

In all production activities, students should be encouraged to reflect on the


communication situation. So they need to realize the purpose of the production, the
interlocutors involved (for example, who is writing or talking to whom?), the format,
the characteristics of the genre, when and where this interaction takes place...
Teacher should also encourage the use of multiple communication resources so that
students can make up for their elementary knowledge of lexis and structures with
other forms of expression. Thus the students’ production can get closer to the social
and authentic use of language.
