Influences effecting

English language
The events of 18th and 19th century had greatly influenced the
English speaking countries having great political and social
importance.
The establishment of 1st cheap newspaper(1816) and of cheap
postage(1840) and improved means of travel and communication
had spread the influences of the standard speech.
The world wars in the first half of 20th century had also influenced
both language and literature.
By 20th century the development of science was in fast progress
and the growth in industrialization put an influence over English
language.
These major influences were;
The growth of science:
• Science have mad our lives easier today due to its development from
past centuries. In every field of science different terms are present in
which are only known to the specialist but a certain number of them
become familiar to common people and pass into general use.
• For example we use the term malaria, typhoid, anemia, appendix etc..
are commonly used to address diseases in peoples.
• We can distinguish between protein and carbohydrate, we can name
the nutrition's that are essential for our health, we can name the
medicines that are used for relaxing our body like Calpol, Panadol,
disprine.
Automobiles, films, broadcasting, computer;
These scientific inventions have brought new words into general use,
such as addition to the vocabulary depends more upon the degree to
which the discoveries enters into life of communities.
Many new words were adopted from the popularity of automobiles
and the activities done by them. for example the word ‘park’ is used
to park a car but in old time this word was used as a military term.
Other words used are truck, steeling, wheel etc.
The same principle is used to explain the influence of film, radio and
television. The word picturing, flim, screen, scenario, projector are
now commonly used.
A common vocabulary of broadcasting are antenna, loud speaker,
lead in etc.
Olympic games that were revived in the last decade of 19th century
brought up different vocab about games in the language through
television, newspaper or radio that were than commonly used.
The first electronic digital computer date from world war 2, and a few
terms have been in general use since then. New meanings of program
language, memory, and hardware are familiar to people who have
never used computer. With wide spread manufacturing and
marketing of personal computer during the 1980s, a much larger
number of English speaker found the need for computer terms in
their daily life.
The world wars;
Another example of events that leave their mark on language are the
world wars. We observe that some of the world are adapted in
English language due to this world wars. For example some military
terms were used to represent new methods of waefare, such as air
raid, antiaircraft gun, tank and blimp. Gas mask and liaison officer
were borrowed from French.
Old words were used in some cases like ‘sector’ was used in sense of
a specific portion of the fighting line.
Other expression already in language got popularity after the world
wars like dugout, machine gun, periscope, soldier.
