WCDMA RAN ARCHITECTURE

The WCDMA RAN consists of the following main parts:

• RNC
An overview of the RNC is given on page 4. The interface
between two different RNCs is called Iur and the interface
to core network nodes is called Iu.
• RBS
The RBS, in standard named Node B, provides the radio
resources and maintains the radio links to the UE within
cells. Embedded management handles O&M and deals
with issues such as configuration, fault, performance, and
security management. The interface between RNC and
RBS is called Iub.
• OSS-RC
The OSS-RC is a software package for handling RAN O&M
tasks. OSS-RC gives a consolidated view of RAN
information such as alarms, configuration, and basic
performance. OSS-RC also provides several interfaces for
integration within an existing network management
environment. The interface towards OSS-RC is called Mur.
RNC MAIN SERCVICES
Main Services and Functions
The RNC provides a number of services and functions that represent segments of high-level Universal
Mobile Telecommunications System (UMTS) services. The end-user services comprise the following:

Mobile telephony (voice)

Unrestricted digital information
Packet data, including High-Speed Downlink Packet Access (HSDPA) and Enhanced Uplink (E-UL)
Short Message Service (SMS)
Mobile positioning and localization
Cell Broadcast Service (CBS)
Ciphering (security)

The end-user functions provided by the RNC are as follows:

•Radio Access Bearer (RAB) service, establishment, release, modification, identification, coordination,
and maintenance including both point to point as well and point to multipoint RABs
•Mobility within UTRAN

In addition to these end-user services and functions, the RNC provides O&M, radio network, and
transmission services.

The RNC3810, Ericsson’s first RNC for
WCDMA. The two central building blocks
for the RNC3810 are the main sub-rack
and the extension sub-rack. The smallest
configuration contains only the main sub-
rack. However, up to five extension sub-
racks can be added to provide capacity
for serving some 375,000 subscribers on
500 base stations

The RNC 3810 is available in several configurations the largest of which is the F configuration.
The F configuration consists of a Main Cabinet (MC) and Extension Cabinet (EC) which contain a Main Sub-
rack (MS) and five Extension Sub-racks (ESs). Each cabinet also contains an Interface Connection Field (ICF).
RNC 3820 Cabinet Configuration

The RNC 3820 is built with up to three high capacity sub-racks, one Main

RNC SUBRACK BOARD
GPB
The GPB operates as a Main Processor (MP).
It contains and executes the main part of the RNC software. In the MS, two GPB roles (C1 and C2) are performed by redundant board pairs.
In case of failure in the active board, the standby GPB takes over the role as active. The remaining GPBs are pooled module MPs.
The module MP, located on the GPB, controls the allocation of tasks to SP devices initially assigned to this module MP
The GPB is equipped with Ethernet and asynchronous serial interfaces accessible from the board front panel. The GPB contains a flash disk drive .
SPB
In RNC 3820 the following types of SPB are supported: SPB3 and SPB31 with five processors, and SPB4 with three dual-core processors. Each processor is loaded
with one or more of the following applications:
Packet Data Router (PDR), terminates the GTP-U protocol towards the Packet CN.
Common Channel, terminates configured radio channels, for example FACH.
Dedicated Channel, terminates dynamic radio channels, for example DCH, with or without HW acceleration.
Each of the SPB types supports up to 84 Mbps of single user throughput.
Special-purpose processor boards (SPB) are used for special, resource-intensive tasks, such as processing user-plane data.
SCB TUB
The switch core board (SCB) handles switching. It is also the The timing unit board (TUB) provides the timing reference for the system.

RNC SUBRACK BOARD-Contd
ET Boards
Exchange terminals—a family of transmission interface boards with standardized internal interfaces to the processing parts of the RNC.
The ATM ETs contain hardware modules that provide the following:
ATM Adaptation Layer type 2 Multiplexing and Demultiplexing
ATM layer
Physical layer and interface adaptation
The Ethernet ETs contain hardware modules that provide the following:
IP protocol termination and internal routing, multiplexing and demultiplexing
Physical layer and interface adaptation, in some cases including Ethernet switching
The following are different versions of the ET boards that implement adaptations to different physical media and transmission standards:
155 Mbps (STM-1 and OC3c), optical link - ET-MF4
155 Mbps (STM-1 and OC3c), channelized (VC-11 and VC-12) optical link - ET-MF41
1 Gbit Ethernet. The board also serves as an ATM to Ethernet gateway - ET-IPG
10 Gbit Ethernet (two interfaces in the back)
No more than six ET-IPG boards per MS and eight ET-IPG boards per ES can be used.
CMXB
The CMXB is a 20-port 10G BASE-CX4 Ethernet Switch. It provides connectivity for internal and external user plane traffic with redundancy between device
boards in the same or different subracks.
The CMXB is also used to support the following features:
Link Aggregation (LA) - using several Ethernet links in a Link Aggregation Group (LAG) in order to reach higher link capacity and link redundancy
Layer 2 Gateway Port (L2GP) - separating the Rapid Spanning Tree Protocol (RSTP) domain inside the RNC from a layer 2 network outside the RNC

SXB
The switch extension board (SXB) used only in RNC3810, which is an extension to the SCB, facilitates the connection of four more extension sub-
racks.
RNC SUBRACK BOARD- GPB
• The general-purpose processor board (GPB) is the computing heart of the
RNC (Figure 1). Several GPBs can form a main processor cluster (MPC).

RBS3206 Overview
RBS 3206 Standard Hardware Units:

FCU is Fan Control Unit. The FCU is a single unit that controls and supervises up to four internal
fans.

FU is Filter Unit. The FU12 is connected between the Radio Units (RU) and two duplex antenna
feeder branches, Ant. A and Ant. B, for transfer of uplink (RX) and downlink (TX) RF signals.
Downlink (TX) signals are filtered in the FU before transfer to the antenna and uplink (RX) signals
from the antenna are filtered and amplified before transfer to the RU. The FU also provides DC
power for and communication with ASC, TMA, RETU when these units are part of the antenna
system.

RUIF is Radio Unit Interface. The RUIF is a device board unit used for communication between the
Radio Units (RU) and the Baseband (BB) digital subrack. It is directly connected to the
Asynchronous Transfer Mode (ATM) backplane and the BB, while point-to-point cables connect the
unit to the RUs. Communication includes control data, clock signals and gamma data.

PDU is Power Distribution Unit. The PDU is used for the following:
Distributing -48 V DC power to Radio Units (RU) and Control Base Units (CBU), (the supply to the
CBU has a 10 ms hold-up)
Protecting CBUs from incorrect polarization
Distributing power to the Fan Control Unit (FCU) and Climate Control Unit (CCU)
RBS 3206 Standard Hardware Units:
RU is Radio Unit. The RU receives digital data from the Baseband, converts the data into analog radio signals, amplifies
these and feeds them to the Filter Unit (FU). The RU also receives radio signals from the FU, converts these signals into
digital data, and sends them to Baseband. The RU contains the Transceiving Receiving Processing (TRP), Downlink Power
Clipping, and power amplifier functions.

CBU is Control Base Unit. The CBU provides: switching, ATM traffic management, power distribution and network
synchronization. The board also functions as a line terminal board with four E1, DS1 or J1 interfaces for ATM and TDM
transport.

RAX is Random Access and Receiver (RAX) board. The RAX board is used for uplink baseband processing. The RAX boards
available in an RBS receive uplink data from the mobile device users. The process of incoming data is shared by all RAX
boards in the RBS baseband pool. The unit has the following functions:
Deserializing
Demodulation
Decoding

TX Transmitter (TX) board. The TX board is used for downlink baseband processing such as transport channel handling,
encoding, modulation, spreading and channel combining. The unit has the following functions:
Soft and softer handover
Transport channel handling
Encoding
Modulation and spreading
Physical channel combining

PSU :The PSU converts incoming voltage to -48 V DC system voltage.

RBS 3418
RBS 3418 INTRODUCTION

The RBS 3418 is an indoor RBS in the powerful and

flexible Main Remote family from Ericsson.
RBS has a similar architecture as the other RBS
3000 products. The RBS can provide macro
coverage and/or in-building coverage for up to 6
sectors with 1 carrier
or up to 3 sectors with 2 carriers.

The main-remote concept separates the traditional

RBS cabinet into two distinct HW entities.
The radio specific HW for each sector is contained
in a Remote Radio Unit (RRU), which is designed to
be located near the antenna.
The rest of the RBS (control, base band, switching
and Iub interface parts) is contained in a Main Unit.
A thin optical fiber pair cable connects each RRU to
the Main Unit.
TRADITIONAL RBS COMPARED WITH MAIN REMOTE

RBS 3418 Main-Remote: the

benefits
1. The RBS 3418 enables lower CAPEX
and OPEX costs.
The CAPEX will be reduced compared to
a traditional Macro site due to:
• Smaller or no additional footprint
required, just install the Main Unit in an
existing 19’’ rack
• No traditional telecom room required.
• Smaller power supply and smaller
battery back up required.
• Less installation costs with easy carry
to site modules
2. No More Feeder Loss.
3. Easier antenna placement: With the
Main-Remote concept, it becomes easier
to place antennas at far greater
distances from each other, and from the
main RBS cabinet (Main Unit).
RBS 3418 Overview

The RBS 3418 Main Unit is designed for indoor

environments in a 19’’ rack.
It contains HW boards similarly to other RBS 3000
products for base band, control, switching and the
Iub transmission interface functionality
Rack Mounted RBS3418
Additionally, RBS 3418 Main Units also contain the
OBIF2, which is the board that provides the optical
interfaces to the Remote Radio Units.
There is one OBIF2 in the Main
Unit with capacity for up to 6 RRUs.

RBS 6000 INTRODUCTION

RBS 6000 Series Key Features:

• Path to sustainability: The RBS 6000 Series ensures a smooth migration to new functionality and new
technologies with existing sites and cabinets, thus providing a path to sustained revenues and profits.
•Power on demand: Reengineering the power supply and fully integrating it into the system were key
objectives in designing the RBS 6000 series. The intelligent power supply provides power on demand that is
exactly matched to what is needed at any given moment, thus ensuring that power consumption is kept to
an absolute minimum.
• Multi-standard: All RBS 6000 base stations support multiple radio technologies.
•Integrated simplicity: New multi-purpose cabinets, an innovative common building practice for all
components, modular design and an extremely high level of integration bring the functionality and capacity
of an entire site down to the size of a cabinet .

RBS 6000 Modules
The radio in the RBS 6000 family consist of 2 modules known as the Radio Unit (RU) and Digital Unit (DU).

The DU provides switching ,

Traffic management, timing,
basebande processing , and radio
interface .

The RU receives digital data

and converts it to analog
signals . It also receives the
radio signals and converts
these to digital signals .
