Introduction of Post Tensioning
Post tensioning is a technique for reinforcing concrete. Post-tensioning
tendons, which are Pre-stressing steel cables inside metal or plastic ducts
or sleeves, are positioned in the forms before the concrete is placed.
Once the concrete has gained strength but before the service loads are
applied, the cables are pulled or tensioned, and anchored against the
outer edges of the concrete.
Post-tensioning is a form of Pre-stressing. Pre-stressing simply means that
the steel is stressed (pulled or tensioned) before the concrete has to
support the service loads.
Most precast, Pre-stressed concrete is actually Pre-tensioned. The steel is
tensioned before the concrete is poured..

History of the Post-Tensioned Concrete System
Post-Tensioned concrete was originally developed during the 1930's by a Frenchman, Eugene Freyssinet, who
realized that placing concrete under compression greatly increased its strength.
After World War II, post-tensioned concrete became a popular building method because of the steel shortage
and the need to replace damaged and bombed-out bridges. The design and use of this method waned until the
mid-1960's, when much of its utilization was in the area of ground-supported slabs for warehouse, apartment,
and residential floors.
In 1976, the Post-Tensioning Institute, which recognized the expanding interest in the field, was formed. The
use of post-tensioned concrete slabs for tennis courts, however, is fairly new. The United States Tennis Court
and Track Builders Association did not issue a general specification for post-tensioned construction until 1982.
 1928 : Modern Pre-stressed Concrete “invented.”
 1946 : Post-Tensioning gained momentum in Europe due to steel shortage.
 1951 : 1st PT bridge constructed in U.S.
 1963 : Pre-stressed Concrete incorporated into ACI Code.
 1976 : Post-Tensioning Institute (PTI) founded.
 The Technology is Time Tested of around 90 years

Advantages of Post Tensioning
Related Advantages Direct Advantage
• Floor to floor height increase
• We can gain 1 additional floor in every 20 to 30 floors approximately
as we can save floor heights in each floor
• Reduction of slab thickness leads to reduced energy needs Reduction in slab thickness

Design
• We can save cost of Foundation
• Formwork costs will be reduced
• Increase in column of free space
Large spans
• Flexible planning
• Improvement in durability Limitation on crack widths
• Improvement in serviceability for all non-structural elements. High deflection control
Reduction of steel
• Easier placing and handling of reinforcement reinforcement and arrangement

Construction
simplification
• Early formwork release.
• Reduction in total construction time.
Quick rotation of formwork
• Reduction of formworks sets.
• Improvement in constructability. – table forms.
• Large floor area can be tackled at a time
Less concrete volume per pour
• Reduction in overall construction time

Application of Post Tension
• Slabs on ground: Today, PT is used extensively for slabs on grade
where soils are likely to move (expansive soils) - especially in the
American southwest.
• Another good application for PT slabs is producing crack-
free tennis courts.
• A recently developed application of PT is external post-tensioning
for strengthening of existing structures, especially as an upgrade to
resist seismic forces.
• Bridge designers have used PT both for cast-in-place concrete and
for precast segmental construction. PT allows longer spans and
keeps cracks tight.
• LNG , Water Concrete tanks & Silo are often post-tensioned to
reduce crack width and leakage.
• Now a days we are using PT technology for most of Commercial &
Residential Buildings
