Off-line Maintenance
Off-line Maintenance

 All of the installed underground HV cable for PLN use Crosslink

Polyethilene (XLPE). Hence, it can be categorized as Maintenance
Free.

Presentation title | Client’s name or Subtitle | DD Month Year 4

Offline Maintenance
During off-line, maintenance practices can implemented as follows:
 All the link boxes are designed to be water-proof. Therefore, it is
critical to ensure all the parts are installed properly and there is no
possibilty of fluid leaking in
 Cleaning up the grounding parts, especially ceramic components for
outdoor termination

On-line Maintenance
On-line Maintenance

 Normally, on-line maintenance can only be undertaken at outdoor

sealing end using thermal hot spot detector
 To be able to monitor and manage the whole system while being on-
line, one needs to install an asset management system beforehand.
Such as Pry-Cam

Trends in HV AC Internal Failures

XLPE PILC (Paper-Insulated Lead Cable)

SCOF (Self Contained Oil-Filled Power Cable) Other cables

• For cable systems, failures are not

significantly time-correlated

Why Partial Discharges

Presentation title | Client’s name or Subtitle | DD Month Year 13

Facts

More that 80% of failures in HV/MV assets are related to Partial Discharge (PD) activity

95% % of Insulation Failure

91% 90% 89%

87%
84%

This is WHY we are strongly committed to

on-line, accurate & reliable PD testing

Other techniques available for cable monitoring

Presentation title | Client’s name or Subtitle | DD Month Year 25

Distributed Temperature Sensing - Goals

• Detect hot spots in order to protect

the cable and accessories

• Maximize the load in the cable in real-

time based on:
 historical loads
 actual ambient conditions

• Simulate possible scenarios

Presentation title | Client’s name or Subtitle | DD Month Year 26

Distributed Temperature Sensing – The Process

• Sensor cable attached or

integrated into High Voltage
Cable

• Temperature is measured along

the entire cable length

• Rating Software calculates

conductor temperature and
predicts temperatures under
certain load scenarios

Presentation title | Client’s name or Subtitle | DD Month Year 27

Distributed Temperature Sensing

• A laser injects a light pulse in the Fiber Optics sensor cable

• The backscattered light is acquired and processed
• Depending on how the backscattered light is processed, two DTS
technologies are available:
• Raman
• Brillouin

Distributed Accoustic Sensing – DAS

Distributed Acoustic Sensing (DAS)

 Mechanical hazards detection: anchoring, digging, theft

 Fault localization
