Earthquake-Response Spectra
• The most direct description of an earthquake motion in time domain is provided by accelerograms that
are recorded by instruments called Strong Motion Accelerographs.

• The accelerograph records three orthogonal components of ground acceleration at a certain location.
Earthquake-Response Spectra
• The peak ground acceleration, duration, and frequency content of earthquake can be obtained from
an accelerograms. An accelerogram can be integrated to obtain the time variations of the ground
velocity and ground displacement.

• Response spectrum is an important tool in the seismic analysis and design of structures. It describes
the maximum response of damped single degree of freedom system to a particular input motion at
different natural periods.
Design Acceleration Spectrum : IS 1893 -1970

• Natural time period considered is 2.8s

• Horizontal seismic coefficient for static design
in different zones shall be taken as

• For Dynamic design, the acceleration spectra

and multiplying by factor F as given below
shall be used

• Vertical seismic coefficient where applicable(structure in which stability is a criterion of design) may be
considered as half of the horizontal seismic coefficient.
Design Acceleration Spectrum : IS 1893 -1984

• Maximum natural time period increased form 2.8s to 3.0s

• Static method is termed as Seismic

coefficient method.
𝛼ℎ = 𝛽𝐼𝛼0

• Response spectra method

𝛼ℎ = 𝛽𝐼𝐹0

Design Acceleration Spectrum : IS 1893 (2002)

• Maximum time period increased form 3.0s to 4.0s

• The design spectrum shape now depends on the type of soil and the foundation-soil factor (beta) has been dropped.
Response spectrum shapes in Fig 2 of the code
are for 5 % damping. Table 3( is 1893 :2002)
gives multiplying factors to obtain design
spectrum for other values of damping.
The multiplication is not to be done for zero
period acceleration (ZPA) and this needs to be
clarified in the code.
𝑍 𝐼 𝑆𝐴
• Clause 6.4.2 specifies the value of Ah as ,
2𝑅𝑔

For any structure with T < 0.1s, the value of Ah will not be taken less than
Z/2 whatever be the value of I/R.. This statement attempts to ensure a
minimal design force for stiff structures.

• This statement is valid only when the first (fundamental) mode period T <
0.1 sec even though the code does not specify so. For higher modes, this
restriction should not be imposed
Design Acceleration Spectrum : IS 1893 (2016)

• This code has given response spectra for equivalent static method
and response spectrum method separately

• The response spectra is given for 6.0 ’s periods

𝑆𝑎
• Expressions for calculating ( ) are given separately for equivalent
𝑔
static method & response spectrum method for rocky / hard, medium
& soft soils in clause 6.4.2

SEISMIC MAP OF INDIA
Seismic Map Of India in IS
1893:2002
• In revision of the seismic zonation map in IS 1893 : 2002,
The zone I and II were combined. Only four zones were
identified: II, III, IV and V.

• The new zone placed the 1993 Latur earthquake in zone

After the Latur Earth-quake in 1993, it was placed in zone III

Kolkata is shown in zone IV, it should be in

zone III
