Details of Examination
• 40 multiple choice questions(4 answer per question.)
• Allotted time for exam is 1 hour 30 minute.
• Score more than 60% (25 or more) to pass.
• There are 3 levels of questions that can be asked:-
K1 : The candidate will recognize, remember and recall a term of
concept.
Examples: definition of ‘failure’ as non-delivery of service to an end user.
K2 : The candidate can select the reasons or explanations for statements related to
the topic. They can summaries, compare, classify and give examples for
concepts of testing.
Examples: The reason why tests should be designed as early as possible is to
find errors when they are cheaper to remove;
K3 : The candidates can select the correct application of a concept or techniques
and/or apply it to a given context.
Example: The candidate selects test cases from a given state transition
diagram in order to cover all transitions.

• 50% of each exam will be K1 level questions, 30% of each exam will be K2 level
questions and 20% will be K3 level questions.

Chapter 2 – 16%
Chapter 3 – 7%
Chapter 4 – 29%
Chapter 5 – 21%
Chapter 6 – 9%
• K3 subjects can have K3, K2 and K1 questions written against them
• K2 subjects can have K2 and K1 questions written against them
• So For a 40 question paper, the breakdown should be:
Chapter 1 - 7 questions
Chapter 2 - 6 questions
Chapter 3 - 3 questions

• There are two types of multiple choice questions:-
Basic : The basic multiple-choice question has a short stem and a single correct
response. A limited amount of information is presented in the stem, and a single set
of response options is presented to the candidates. The following example of a basic
multiple-choice question is targeted to assess knowledge of static testing at K1 level
of application.
Example:
What does a tester do during "Static testing"?
a) Reviews requirements and compares them with the design
b) Runs the tests on the exact same setup each time
c) Executes test to check that all hardware has been set up correctly
d) Runs the same tests multiple times, and checks that the results are statistically meaningful

Roman type : In this format, the candidate is presented with several statements;
each proceeded by either a Roman Numeral or a letter of the alphabet. This differs
from the multiple-choice questions already discussed in that the response options
may require the candidate to know or derive several pieces of related information.
The task for the candidate is to select the option that represents the correct
combination of statements.
Example:
Which of the following answers reflect when Regression testing should normally be performed?
A. Every week
B. After the software has changed
C. On the same day each year
D. When the environment has changed
E. Before the code has been written
1) B & D are true, A, C & E are false
2) A & B are true, C, D & E are false
3) B, C & D are true, A & E are false
4) B is true, A, C, D & E are false

Introduction of ISTQB Syllabus
• ISTQB syllabus comprises of 6 main chapters,
those are as follows:-
1. Fundamentals of testing
2. Testing throughout the software life cycle
3. Static techniques
4. Test design technique
5. Test management
6. Tool support for testing
• Out of all these chapters, chapter 4 and 5 are
the most important chapters.
• All K3 types of questions comes from only
chapter 4 and 5.
• Near about 20 questions(50%) is expected
from chapter 4 and 5.
• Chapter 3 and 6 are less important, total 7
questions(16%) is expected from these
chapters
• Total 27 questions (68% - which is more than
required to pass the exam) comes from
chapter 1,4 and 5.
• So the order of important chapters is as
follows:-
(Higher importance to lower importance)
4 >> 5 >> 1 >> 2 >> 6 >>3

How to plan ISTQB?
• Level of question were easy but they are quite tricky.
• Most important document for ISTQB-foundation level certification is
Syllabus it self because most of the questions come from only this
document. So read this document at least 2 or 3 times, depending
upon time.
• Preparation for Solving objective types of question is also a good
practice for ISTQB. So try to discover as many as possible
questions.
• 5 days complete study is sufficient to crack this exam, plan your
time accordingly.
• At the time of exam if any confusion regarding correct answer of
any question then go with different approach that is “remove all
false answers”.
• Don’t go for your testing experience, may be your experience is
right but it may be possible that it does not match with the syllabus
so in that case your answer will be assumed as wrong, pick the right
answer according to the syllabus of ISTQB.
