The Tale of Princess

Kaguya (Kaguyahime),
A folklore from Japan
Once upon a time, there lived a couple of old bamboo-cutters. They cut
bamboos in the forest and sell it to make a living for them. Unfortunately, they
don’t have a child. One day while they were cutting bamboos in the forest, they
found a glowing bamboo and decided to chop it down. Inside the bamboo, they
found a cute little girl.
The little girl was only the size of a human’s thumb; she was so small and fragile.
The old couple decided to raise her like their own child. They named her Kaguya.
Since that day, every time the old couple went to the forest to cut bamboos, they
always found a pile of gold inside the bamboo trees. They quickly became rich.
Kaguya grew up to be a
beautiful young girl. A lot
of people in her village
has taken a liking to her.
A little time after that, the
story about a beautiful
girl has spread around
the city. Men from all
walks of life—from
princes from another
country to unfortunate
people—wanted to marry
Kaguya. They all went to
Kaguya’s house to
propose to her, but
Kaguya declined them all.
Until there was only 5
princes left.
In order to propose to Kaguya, she asked them to bring 5 things that were impossible to get by a
human. First was the bowl of the Holy Buddha, second was a gold tree with glowing fruits, the
third was the skin of a white rat from the depths of a volcano, the fourth was a pearl of a dragon,
and the last thing was the sparkling seashells of a swallowtail.
All of the candidates failed to bring those things that
Kaguya asked them to bring. The first candidate brought
an ordinary bowl. The second brought a fake tree which
he got from a craftsman. The third brought a white rat skin
that was easily burnt. The fourth candidate gave up
halfway because his ship sunk in the storm while getting
the dragon’s pearl. The last candidate died because of a
broken waist.
In the end, nobody succeed to propose to Kaguya.
The Emperor heard about this failure and wanted to try
proposing to Kaguya too. But Kaguya instantly refused
him. Her parents begged her to just marry The Emperor,
but Kaguya kept on declining with various reasons. After
she was really fed up with The Emperor, she locked
herself up and didn’t want to show her face to The
Emperor.
Fall finally comes. Kaguya spent her nights by looking up to the moon while crying. If
her parents asked her, “why?” she wouldn’t answer it. But on the fifteenth day on the
month, her crying was even more uncontrollable.
Kaguya finally confessed to her parents. “Actually,
I am not from Earth. I am from the Moon. I was
sent here because when I was born, there was a
huge war in my country. Those gold you found in
the bamboos… it was gratitude from my people for
taking care of me here. Now, I have to go back to
the Moon on the fifteenth this month, when it’s full
moon.”

Her parents told The Emperor her true identity,

and The Emperor sent his men to guard Kaguya
from the moon-people to prevent her from going
back to the Moon.
When the moon-people came that
night, the guards was blinded by
their light so they couldn’t fight
them and were unable to prevent
Princess Kaguya from going back
to the Moon. Before she leaves,
Kaguya gave The Emperor an
immortal elixir. But The Emperor
felt it’s useless to live forever
without Princess Kaguya. So he
asked his men to burn the elixir
on the top of the Fuji Mountain.
And so,… Princess Kaguya went back to the Moon without
chances of going back to the Earth.

THE END
Moral Of The Story
