Objectives
•To investigate the seed conservation biology of wild species of Musa (especially M.
balbisiana) to determine its storability, germination and viability

• Development of protocols for cryopreservation of wild Indian Musa species, using

seed, embryo and meristem explants

• Conservation of germplasm of wild Indian Musa species, based on above-optimized

Achievements / Plan for next semester
Achievements:
Attended ICGEB Workshop on “Plant responses to light and stress: Emerging issues in
climate change” from October 10-12, 2018 at ICGEB, New Delhi, India.
Collected different genomic groups of wild Musa species from Mizoram University

Plan for next semester:

Experiments on ageing of seeds to know about the maximum viability of seeds/embryos to
characterise the type of seeds.
 Biochemical analysis of seeds to know about the constituents which play major role in their
germination and storage.
Experiments on breaking seed coat dormancy to check the germination of whole seed in in
vitro conditions
