What is teen pregnancy?

● Teen pregnancy is a problem in which teenagers are having unprotected sex

and are not being able to finish school

Statistics (United States)

● In 2014, a total of 249,078 babies were born to teenage girls (age 15-19)

● The overall teen birth rate was 24 births per 1,000 girls

● The teen birth rate for whites is 17 births per 1,000 girls

● The teen birth rate for African Americans is 35 births per 1,000 girls

● The teen birth rate for Hispanics is 38 births per 1,000 girls
Statistics (Los Angeles County)
● The overall birth rate in Los Angeles is 23.5 births per 1,000 girls
Why is it an issue?

● Daughters of teen parents are 22% more likely to become teen mothers

themselves

● Not a lot of teens use protection and fail to realize that there are some

consequences of not using protection

Effects of Teen pregnancy on Parents

● They are not able to finish school or pursuit their dreams

● There is a chance that the parents will kick them out of the house so they will

have to have a low paying job in order to live somewhere else

● Very stressful for the parents and most guys will leave the mother and she

will take care of the baby by herself

Impact on the community
● Teen pregnancy and birth rates in the United States have

declined since 1991

● Teen pregnancy will never be stopped

● Make teens realize that having a baby isn’t easy especially at their age

● After teens realize that having a baby is not easy they will change the way

they think about sex

Prevention

● Promote abstinence

● If you really want to have sex , there are many ways of using protection for

both genders to prevent pregnancy

● Some examples of protection is using condoms , birth control pills , a female

condom, or a vasectomy
