CONCRETE COLUMN
Illustration

A concrete column is 5.00m high with a cross sectional

dimensions of 25cm x 30cm. If there are 8 columns of the
same size. Find the required cement, sand and gravel if the
plan specifies class "A" concrete.
Solution
Refer to this table using class "A" concrete.

Find the volume of one column.

V = .25m x .30m x 5.00m
V = .375 cu. m.

Find the total volume of the 8 columns.

V = .375 x 8 Multiply:
V = 3.0 cu. m.
Cement : 3.0 x 9 = 27 @ 40kg
Sand : 3.0 x .50 = 1.5 cu. m.
Gravel : 3.0 x 1.0 = 3.0 cu. m.

ESTIMATING BY THE LINEAR METER METHOD

 Again the method of computing the materials required for columns beams and girders could be simplified
further with the aid of this table.
 Adopting the problem of illustration earlier using this table the solution follows:

Find the total length of the 8 columns.

8 x 5m = 40m

Refer to table, class "A" concrete for a 25 x 30 cm column size.

Multiply:

Cement : 40 x .675 = 27 bags

Sand : 40 x .038 = 1.52 cu. m.
Gravel : 40 x .075 = 3.0 cu. m.

POST AND FOOTING

A concrete column 4.00m high with a cross sectional dimension of 20 cm x 25 cm is resting on a concrete
footing 20 cm thick by 80 cm square. If class "B" concrete is specified, find the quantity of cement, sand and
gravel if there are 12 columns of the same size.
Solution B) Footing Slab
Find the area of the footing.
A = 12pcs x .80 x .80 = 7.68 sq. m.

A) Column
Refer to the 1-3 along the 20 cm thick slab class "B"
Find the total length of the 12 columns.
mixture multiply:
12 x 4 = 48m

Cement : 7.68 x 1.50 = 11.52 bags

Refer to table 1-4 along the 20 x 25 column size under
Sand : 7.68 x .10 = .76 cu. m.
class "B" mixture, multiply:
Gravel : 7.68 x .20 = 1.53 cu. m.

Cement : 48 m x .375 = 18 bags @ 40kg

C) Summary of A & B
Sand : 48 m x .025 = 1.2 cu. m.
Cement: 18 + 11.52 = 29.52 / 30 bags
Gravel : 48 m x .050 = 2.4 cu m.
Sand : 1.2 + .76 = 1.96 / 2 cu. m.
Gravel : 2.4 + 1.53 = 3.93 / 4 cu. m.
From the figure earlier, determine the number of 40kg cement including the sand and gravel required, using class "A"
concrete for the footing and class "C" for the flooring
Solution
Cement : .708 x 9 = 6.37 bags @ 40kgs
A) Footing Slab
Sand : .708 x .50 = .354 cu. m.
Solve for the volume of "F"
Gravel : .708 x 1.0 = .708 cu. m.
V = .15 x .80 x .80
V = .096 cu. m.
C) Concrete Slab
Determine the volume of the slab
Multiply by 4pcs.
V = .10 x 3.00 x 4.00
.096 x 4 = 0.384
V = 1.2 cu. m.

B) Pedestal
Using class "C" mixture from table 1-2
Solve for the volume of "P"
Multiply :
V = .30 x .30 x .90
V = .081
Cement : 1.2 x 6 = 7.2 bags @ 40kgs.
Sand : 1.2 x .50 = 0.6 cu. m.
Multiply by 4pcs.
Gravel : 1.2 x 1.0 = 1.2 cu. m.
.081 x 4 = 0.324

SUMMARY
Total volume : 0.708 cu. m.
Total Cement : 6.37 + 7.2 = 13.57 / 14 bags
Sand : .354 + 0.6 = .95 / 1 cu. m.
Using class "A" concrete from table 1-2
Gravel : .708 + 1.2 = 1.9 / 2 cu. m.
