What is listening ?
 If you ask a group of people to give one word
description of listening, they would say hearing.

 Listening is the active process of understanding


what the speaker is saying and feeling .

 Listening is hearing with a purpose, it is


following and understanding the sound.

 Unlike hearing, listening is a psychological


process.
Process of Listening

Listening is a four step process :

 Receiving sound waves through ears – sound.

 Interpret the received sound – meaning.

 Evaluate the meaning – message.

 Responding to the message – reaction.

What is Active Listening ?

 A way of listening and responding to another person that


improves mutual understanding.

What is Reflective Listening ?

Reflective listening means focusing completely on


the true message being spoken. It means hearing and
understanding the words and body language of the
person who is talking  to you.
What is Empathic Listening ?
 Empathic listening is a way of listening and
responding to another person that improves
mutual understanding and trust.

What is Inactive Listening ?


 Inactive listening means you listen to
something without focusing on it. 

 There is no attempt to understand.


What is Sympathetic Listening ?
 The speaker who seeks sympathetic listening
might have suffered a tragedy or needs
someone to listen to a series of complex
thoughts.

What is Selective Listening ?


 Selective listening is a listening technique
that filters and summarizes to achieve
comprehension.

 Be a good listener.
 Remove distractions.

 Refrain your mind from wandering away.

 Encourage the speaker.

 Do not pre-judge.

 Observe the non-verbal clues.

 Repeat the main points.


CONCLUSION
 Listening is the active process of understanding what
the speaker is saying and feeling .

 listening is a psychological process.

 There are 6 types of listening : Active listening,


Sympathetic listening, Reflective listening, Empathic
listening, Inactive listening, Selective listening.

 We should try to overcome the barriers in listening by


keeping in mind the strategies to proper listening.
