provide insight into cause and effect by demonstrating what outcomes occurs when a particular factor is manipulated. A child may carry out basic experiments to understand gravity. Experiments and other hand on activities are very important to student learning in science classroom. a test, trial, or tentative procedure; an act or operation for the purpose of discovering something unknown o r of testing a principle, supposition, etc Science experiments encourage understanding Experience reality of science Motivation to learn Intellectual honesty Development of scientific attitude Satisfaction of curiosity Development of good habits Learning by doing Learn way of handling the objects Development of experimental skills Ability of keen observation Preparation for application of theory Provide first hand experience The following points should be kept in mind Planning of work co-ordination between theory and practical interest and curiosity should not be lost Experiments should neither be too difficult nor too easy Purpose should be clear to students Faithful record of experiment Proper setting of apparatus Proper observation of students Firstly prefer individual work but in case of large class and equipments are inadequate grouping can be done. Each group of pupil perform different experiment. In order to provide normal social situation: Students should be free to choose fellow students Seats should be assigned Necessary equipments for daily use The following points should be kept in mind Easy accessibility of apparatus A place for everything & everything should be in its place List of chemicals required In order to make practical work purposeful there must be proper discipline in the lab. Every student must do his work without disturbing others. Some lab rules are given below No class should enter in lab in the absence of teacher Breakage and faults in equipments should be reported to teacher Study your lab experiment carefully. If you are in doubt about any procedure, ask your teacher.
Safety glasses must be worn whenever any
substance is being heated or when mixing or pouring chemicals. Report all accidents, injuries or incorrect procedures to your teacher at once. If clothing should catch fire, smother it with a blanket or coat. NEVER RUN!! .If you spill acid or other chemical, wash with water or ask your teacher for help Never taste any chemical or transfer chemicals by mouth pipette. Never eat or drink in the lab. .Never inhale chemicals. Keep combustible materials away from open flames. Do not throw paper or other solid material into the sink. Clean or wash apparatus at end of experiment Before students starts experiment instructions must be clear to them regarding the particular experiment, the precautions to taken. In order to give proper guidance to students for doing practical, the following aids should be made use of Lab Manuals Instruction cards ◦ Should be properly and neatly written in the given format (Sr no./Date/Lesson or Topic/Remarks or marks/Trs sign/Parent’s sign) ◦ Should be regularly maintained ◦ The signatures of teachers and remarks to be filled immediately after corrections. Neatness ◦ The note book/work book should be neatly covered. ◦ Name, class, subject etc should be neatly and legibly written on top of the note book ◦ Ensure neat work by taking a round while the students are writing so that you know how they are doing the work and checking them immediately if their work is not up to the mark ◦ Diagrams should be first neatly drawn, shown to the teacher and then coloured to avoid untidy work. ◦ Read each and every word carefully while correcting ◦ Avoid correcting in your classrooms as you cannot concentrate fully and are bound to overlook mistakes.
