OBJECTIVES:
At the end of the lesson, the students should be
able to:
 Identify the proper usage of the different tools
and materials in dressmaking.
 Classify sewing tools and equipment
according to their uses.
 Understand the proper use and functions
sewing tools and materials in dressmaking.
 Show appreciation on the topic through
participation in group activities.

Tape Measure

A flexible
measuring
device used in
taking body
measurements.
RULER

a useful tool to
have for
measuring and
drawing straight
seam lines and
cutting lines.
Sewing Gauge
used for
measurements
at hem lines,
button holes and
areas where
other small
measurements
require checking
L-Square

used to transfer
measurements to the
draft pattern. It also
divides the garment
into the desired
measurement
French Curve

used to shape
the depth of the
neck hole and
armhole of the
pattern.

TOOLS
Bent-Handled Dressmaker’s
Shears

The blades move


easily and cut
smoothly along the
entire length and the
points should come
together
Cutting Scissors

used for
trimmings,
clipping threads
and snipping
slashes
Thread Clippers
specifically used to snip
threads and they are not
designed to cut fabric.

seams, either as a result
of an error or during
alterations.

Chalk Pencils/Dressmaker Pencils

used to make
fine lines on
fabric. It has
an erasing
brush at one
end.
Dressmaker’s Carbon Paper

also called dressmaker‘s tracing paper is a


specially waxed carbon paper that
transfer‘s the tracing wheel‘s markings to
the fabric.
Wax Chalk

used for woolen fabrics.


Wax can be removed by
pressing.
Pinning &
Sewing Tools
Pincushion

holds the straight pins and needles


while working to prevent accidents.
Needle/Sewing Needle

Used in making
temporary stitches
and buttonholes
Threader

aids in putting the


thread to the
needle.
Thimble

small hard pitted
