RATIONALE
“Reading is to the mind what exercise is to the body.”
Joseph Addison penned this quote roughly 300 years ago,
before modern science and research equipment could back
up his claim. Today, however, scientific studies show that
reading does make you smarter. Reading a novel, for
example, increases the blood flow and improves
connectivity in the brain (Abke, 2015).
The Reading Comprehension Level of Grade 11 Students
Reading is a process of decoding symbols in order to
construct meaning. When a learner reads, he or she uses
his prior knowledge to create meaning from the text he or
she is reading. Frank Smith defines reading as an act of
communication in which information is transferred from a
transmitter to a receiver wherein the transmitter is the text
and the receiver is the learner.

Reading is not merely an ability to recognize written or
printed words, but it also refers to putting meaning to what
you read and drawing a unified thought of what is read
(Tizon, 2012). Comprehension is the reader’s ability to
understand what he or she is reading, interpret ideas and
infuse meaning to printed words.

According to Ozdemir (2009), reading is fundamental in
getting knowledge as all the lessons and learning activities
are mostly based on the power of comprehensive reading
which makes it really necessary for a reader to read
comprehensively. Learning depends on understanding so a
learner who cannot comprehend what he or she is reading
will find it difficult for him or her to be successful in his or
her lessons. The Reading Comprehension Level of Grade 11 Students
Today, most of the information can only be acquired
through reading comprehensively, making reading
comprehension a really important and an outstanding skill
in getting information. Thus, reading comprehension is
really important so that readers may not only focus on the
text but also on the interpretation of its deeper meanings.

As observed, the demand for Senior High School students to be
proficient in reading and speaking English is rising. The four
reading comprehension levels namely Literal level, Interpretative
level, Critical level, and Application level have to be introduced to
learners for the purpose of having a deeper understanding and
better choosing and usage of the appropriate texts they need to
read to enhance these reading comprehension levels they need to
possess before entering Senior High School. This attracted the
attention of the researcher in the present study.

Statement of the Problem
This study aims to determine the Reading Comprehension Level of
Grade 10 Students of Enrico T. Prado National High School. It will also
seek to answer the following questions:
1. What is the level reading comprehension of learners in terms of:
a. Literal Level
b. Interpretative Level
c. Creative Level
d. Application Level

2. What activities or learning models can be
proposed to enhance the students’ reading
comprehension skills?

METHODOLOGY
Research Design
This study will use descriptive design. It aims to
determine the reading comprehension level of Grade 10
students of Enrico T. Prado National High School. It seeks to
identify the students’ reading comprehension level and the
effectivity of the proposed learning activities.

The respondents of the study will be the Grade 10
students of Enrico T. Prado National High School.

Research Instrument
The research instrument that will be used in the study will
be a questionnaire to determine the profile of the participants
and a 40 – item reading comprehension test/questionnaire.
The test is composed of 5 literary selections. Each selection
has four sets of two questions of different levels namely:
literal, interpretative, creative, and application levels.

enhanced their reading level and make it apt to
