Polynomials

Defination- let x be any variable, n be a positive integer

and as,a1 ,a2 , …..,an be constants(real numbers).Then,
f(x) = anxn+an-1xn-1+….+a1x+a0
Called a polynomial in variable x.
In the polynomial f(x) = anxn+an-1xn-1+….+a1x+a0
anxn,an-1xn-1,….,a1x and a0 are known as the terms of the
polynomial and an,an-1,….,a1 and a0 are their coefficients.
For example ,
1. p(x)=3x-2
2.q(y)= 3y2-2y+4
3.f(u)= u3-3u2+2u-4
The exponent of the highest degree
term in a polynomial is known as its
degree.
For example,
1.f(x)=3x+1/2 is a polynomial in the
variable x of degree 1.
2. g(y)= 9x2-7x +5 is a polynomial in
the variable y of degree 2.
Based on Degree
i. Constant Polynomial
ii. Linear Polynomial
iii. Quadratic polynomial
iv. Cubic Polynomial
v. Bi-Quadratic Polynomial

 Based on terms
i. Monomial
ii. Binomial
iii. Trinomial
A polynomial of degree zero is Called a
constant polynomial. For example- f(x)=7,p(x)=-2/3 etc.
A polynomial of degree 1 is called a linear
polynomial.
For Example-f(x)=7x+3,p(y)=5y+9 etc.
A polynomial of degree 2 is called a Quadratic
polynomial . For example- f(x)= 7y2+9y+4,g(x)=y2 etc.
A polynomial of degree of 3 is called a cubic
polynomial . For example- f(x)=n3 +7,m(y)=t3 +7t etc.
A fourth degree polynomial is known as Bi-
Quadratic polynomial . For example – f(x)=X4+7x3 s(y)=2X4+3x3 etc.
A polynomial having only one term
are known as Monomial.
A polynomial having only two terms
are known as Binomial.
A polynomial having only three terms
are known as trinomial.

If f(x) is a polynomial and ⍺ is any real number

,then the real number obtained by replacing x by ⍺
in f(x),is called the value of f(x) at x=⍺ and is
denoted by f(⍺).
A real number ⍺ is a zero of a polynomial f(x),if(α)=0.
