CLIMATE CHANGE

Getting Ready

 1. Fill out the Bingo Card below (Table7.1) by seeking

help from your classmates.
 Your classmates will take turns in choosing which
question they can answer.
 Then, they will write their respective names below
the chosen question/statement.
 All the questions/statements must be filled up.
(Wait for the signal of your teacher when to start.)

What is it for me?

 Each one of us interacts with our environment

that is why we are affected by changes in
our environment.

 You
should not disregard the things that are
happening in your surroundings.
Greenhouse Effect

 The greenhouse effect is defined as when the Earth's

atmosphere becomes thick with gases and
substances which trap the sun's radiation, making
the Earth warmer.
 An example of the greenhouse effect is global
warming.
Activity 8: It’s gettin’ hot in here
 On a warm and dry day, Jen was left by her dad in
the car.
 She
noticed that the air conditioner of the car was not
working well.
 Then, she started to sweat a lot.

 Let
us help Jen understand her situation by performing
the next activity.
Let’s watch this!
 Greenhouse gases trap heat preventing it from
escaping the Earth. All gases absorb heat, although
some just absorb more than others.
 Thus, assuming solar radiation is constant, the
average atmospheric temperature depends on the
mix of gases.
 More greenhouse gases in the atmosphere mean
that the equilibrium temperature will be higher as
these gases absorb more heat.
 This will result in the increase of global temperature.
 Less greenhouse gases will mean lower temperature.
 Ifthe mix of gases in the atmosphere were altered
considerably, the Earth’s temperature would change
significantly, and we will be faced with new conditions that
we are not used to, which we will have to somehow adapt
to, or face extinction.
 Areas that are found in temperate regions may have
shorter winters.
 Countriesthat are found in tropical regions may have
longer and drier summers.
 Glaciers that cover land will melt which will result in the rise
of sea levels.
What blocks the Sun’s energy from
escaping from the Earth?
 Unlikea greenhouse, the Earth does not have a
layer of glass over it! Instead, molecules in our
atmosphere called greenhouse gasses absorb the
heat
Greenhouse Gases

 water vapor,
 ozone
 nitrous
oxide
 carbon dioxide.
Methane (CH4):

 Methane is emitted during the production and

transport of coal, natural gas, and oil.
 Methane emissions also result from livestock and
other agricultural practices and by the decay of
organic waste in municipal solid waste landfills.
Carbon Dioxide (CO2)

 Thereare both natural and human sources of carbon

dioxide emissions.
 Naturalsources include decomposition, ocean
release and respiration.
 Human sources come from activities like cement
production, deforestation as well as the burning of fossil
fuels like coal, oil and natural gas.
Nitrous oxide
 is a by-product of fuel combustion in mobile and
stationary sources.
 When any fossil fuel is burnt, part of the nitrogen that
is in the fuel and surrounding air gets oxidized
creating nitrous oxide emissions.
 The majority of stationary emissions come from coal
fired power plants
Why is it called a greenhouse?
 Greenhouses are made of glass and are designed
to hold heat inside.
 Our planet's atmosphere also traps energy, sort of
like a greenhouse.
 Energy from the Sun can enter the Earth’s
atmosphere, but not all of it can easily find its way
out again.
Is Greenhouse Effect useful?
 The greenhouse effect is useful because trapping some
energy keeps the temperatures on our planet mild and
suitable for living things.
 Withoutits atmosphere and the greenhouse effect, the
average temperature at the surface of the Earth would be
zero degrees Fahrenheit.
 However,
too many greenhouse gases can cause the
temperature to increase out of control.
 0° Fahrenheit = -17.7778° Celsius
 When the Industrial Revolution began, more emissions of carbon
dioxide and other greenhouse gases threatened all living things.
 Developed countries and developing countries became more
dependent on fossil fuels.
 Burning of fossil fuels is one of the main sources of carbon dioxide
emission.
 What would be the outcome if there is too much carbon dioxide in
the atmosphere?
 There would be an increase of global temperature.
 So, when will you take action to help stop global warming?
 Remember that your time is ticking.
 Act now before it’s too late.
