1.3. COMPOSICIÓN

La tierra es producto de la erosión de las rocas en


la corteza terrestre. La erosión ocurre
fundamentalmente a través de la pulverización de
las rocas provocada por movimientos glaciales,
del agua, del viento y por la expansión del agua
congelada en las grietas de las rocas.
Adicionalmente los ácidos orgánicos
existentes en las plantas, las reacciones químicas
producidas por el agua y el oxígeno provocan
también la erosión de las rocas.
La composición y variedad de las propiedades de
la tierra dependen del lugar donde se encuentra.
Por ejemplo los suelos con alto contenido de
grava son más apropiados para las técnicas de
barro apisonado, siempre y cuando contengan
suficiente arcilla. Los suelos en las laderas de los
ríos, por lo general, son más limosos y por lo tanto
menos resistentes a las inclemencias del tiempo
y a la compresión.

1.3. COMPONENTES

La tierra es una mezcla de arcilla, limo y arena,


que algunas veces contiene
agregados mayores, llamados gravas. En
ingeniería sus partículas se definen
dependiendo de su diámetro: partículas con
diámetros menores a 0,002 mm se
denominan arcillas, entre 0,002 y 0,06 mm limos y
entre 0,06 y 2 mm arenas.
Partículas mayores a 2 mm se denominan gravas.
La arcilla actúa como aglomerante natural para
pegar las partículas
mayores de tierra como lo hace en el hormigón el
cemento. Limo, arena y otros
agregados constituyen rellenos en la tierra.
Dependiendo de cuál de estos tres
componentes sea el predominante se puede
hablar de un suelo arcilloso, limoso
o arenoso.

1.3. TECNOLOGIA DE CONSTRUCCIÓN CON TIERRA

La arquitectura habitacional se manifiesta a través de las diversas tecnologías que se han utilizado en la
producción de un hábitat, pudiendo referir el término tecnología a los medios y procedimientos aplicados, al
conjunto de máquinas y herramientas, insumos materiales y productos, dentro de un contexto de
conocimientos de los cuales dispone una sociedad en un momento determinado. Deben considerarse,
igualmente, procesos de asentamiento tales como adaptación a un clima, a un terreno, a un territorio, a la
forma de habitarlo.
De tal manera resulta válido afirmar que son los habitantes de un lugar, en su acontecer histórico, social y
cultural, los responsables de construir y desarrollar su arquitectura.
Son varias las técnicas constructivas que utilizan la tierra arcillosa como material principal, las más conocidas
son:
