The Interiors of the Durbar hall

• Used for defence in the ancient times.
• Mostly made up of mud.
• It was reconstructed to form a new fortress by
Tipu sultan using solid black rock.
• The interior of the fort was densely populated
until about 1910.
• The fort we see today is transformed in to acres
of emerald turf & beds of glowing flowers (as in
pic).

• A distinct Indo – Saracenic style of built.
• Chhatris are of curvilinear shades.

• Used as a picture galary & art museum since 1915.
• Predominantly built in Hindu style.
• The existing facade with a hall was added in 1900 which
served as a venue for formal events.
• The rich, eye catching facade is composed of 3 large openings
with graduated end bays punctuated with decorative pilasters .
• Heavily moulded ,bracketed entablature supports an
elaborately crafted miniature of temples,religious motifs.
• Niches ,cusped arches finials embellish the elevation.
• Cusped arched balconies, stained glass window shutters,
ventilators are the surviving original features of the hall which
then had a bridge like platform to view a stage show or a
cinema show.

• A typical European-classical style of built.
• Situated at a junction ,the building offers varying
fare in its two facades.
• The park lane facade is composed of Roman-
arched openings punctuated with pilasters.
• The other facade continues the Arches with
varied Niches, Slit openings, Balustrated hand
rails, Parapets.

• Double storey verandahs on either side with
arched openings & pilasters.
• The front Portico with Byzantine arches on
slender columns,is looked over by twin
minarets of mosque - like the design of domes

• A pronounced Graeco-Roman revivalist.
• A Vatican dome resting on an octagonal drum.
• Arched, pilastered colonnades form the two wings.
• The end blocks, each with a set of elaborately carved
& moulded niches are treated with pyramidal steps.
• Greek dentils define the lines & a balustrated
parapet,lending to a touch of richness.
• Set in a vast ground it deserves a well laid out
garden.

• The edifice commands a vast foreground.
• A heavy multiple moulded entablature & a
wide spanned plaster-relief picture of goddess
saraswati distinguish the central block.
• Flanking wings at two levels have contrasting
details of balustrated & pierced parapets,
Roman arches, Tuscan double columns.

• A yet another fine sculptured classic piece in European-classical style.
• A majestic two storey composition of twin lonic columns.
• A projecting porch, spherical domes with lanterns, central dome that rises
above the circular entrance hall.
• The interior is a show piece of available skills of local crftsmen,seen in rich
laid decorative motifs on walls,ceilings,carved wood shutters.
• Imported elements in the décor includes stained glass,floor tiles,luxury
fittings,furnishings of rooms,attached conveniences.
• The balustrated staircase,branching off from landing to reach the first floor
hall,is a superbly crafted creation of Venetian marble.

• One of the most spacious edifice with a spacious
verandah.
• Throughout the construction bricks are used.
• The design is in Roman style of architecture with
Tuscan pillars.
• Particular attention has been given for the travellers
convinience.
• However the faults of styling has been the narrow
front rooms overpowered by wide verandahs.

• Undoubtedly amongst the grandest churches, it portrays a perfect Gothic
style.
• The main hall or nave designed to seat more than 800 worshippers,is as
awesomely handsome as the cathedral’s richly- crafted exterior.
• The multiple moulded columns end in stately arches.
• The altar is set against arched screens of stone work.
• The stained glass windows which overlook the apse show the birth,
crucifixion, death of Jesus.
• The twin spires are about 175 feet in height.
• The elevation is a sumptuous composition of a variety of decorative
elements & openings-pilastered niches & lancet windows.

• The Gopura is a typical pyramidal structure in
Dravidian style reflecting the imagery of the
mountain
• It is composed of motifs suggesting the lathe turned
pillars.
• A Howdah like entablature topped with bulbous
domical.
• Each storey from the front has a central opening
flanked by gracefully poised figures.
• The mouldings, string-courses, dentils & rows of
merlons impart a visual treat to the on lookers.

• The building opened in 1891 housed the department of
archaeology besides the library both of which were attached to
the University.
• A predominant European-Classical structure with a blend of
some Hindu features.
• The elevation is composed of a stepped balustrated approach
to the triple arched entrance verandah.
• The flanking verandahs are supported on lonic columns.
• The central dome above heavy entablature contains a
composition of pilastered niches surrounding a panel
depicting shiva’s marriage with parvati.
• The dome-suggestive of the classical Mansard roof with
sloping four sides is topped by a wrought iron crest.

• This 70 year old structure basically on European
lines focuses on three Hindu niches which crest
the elevation.
• The central bay is double storeyed while the end-
bays have larger openings.
• Pilasters punctuate the rectangular openings.
• Balustrated parapets are supported on curving
chajjas on brackets-an Indian touch.
• The flanks curve gently from the central bay.

• Old colonial bungalows with typical features of
triple-arched porticos,arcaded verandahs,parapets
with simple mouldings,circular openings in monkey-
top gables,wooden handrails.
• On the first floor, finialed piers & Gothic windows
contrasted with rectangular openings can be found.
• Some window sets are covered by chhajjas
overlooked by arched mouldings,while some portico-
openings are partially filled with trellis-work.
• They recall an era of row- constructions meant one
acre bungalows set in a row.

• The elevation is remarkable for highly ornate
features & painstakingly executed
embellishments.

hewn balconies, intricately carved stone
columns, parapet-merlons.

• A very interesting ornate two storey structure of
1900 vintage composed of a mixture of European &
Indian decorative elements.
• Typical of an era in which ornamentation was
considered an essential part of architecture.
• The two storey structure comprises of verandahs
supported by Tuscan pillars, highly ornate
rectangular windows on either side,each with
varied ensembles of chajjas & brackets.
• Rooms on the sides have projecting look out
balconies resting on masonry corbels.
