This document discusses a study on rampant absenteeism among senior high school students at Cansilayan National High School. Absenteeism is considered a hidden educational crisis that predicts undesirable outcomes for students. The researchers aim to understand the reasons for high absenteeism rates among 11th and 12th grade students at the school. Specifically, the study seeks to identify which students are most frequently absent based on gender, grade level, track/specialization, and economic status. It also aims to determine how often students skip school and the causes and effects of their absenteeism. The researchers hope the study will help teachers and the institution address this issue.

Of Cansilayan NHS Rationale Education is not just about teachers feeding students with information, knowledge and skills. Being an educated person means having initiative and being flexible regardless of the situation, being able to sense precisely, think doubtlessly, and act effectively (Jaura 2013)¹. Attendance is a significant factor in school success among students. Studies shows that better attendance is related to higher academic achievement. Beginning in kindergarten, students who attend school regularly scores higher on tests than their peers who are frequently absent (Kassarnig 2017)². Rationale Nowadays, absenteeism is a chronic, unpredictable activity of the students, and is being considered as a "hidden educational crisis" worldwide³. It is rampant and is a strong predictor of undesirable outcomes in the adolescent stage including academic failure, school drop-outs, illegal substance abuse, fraternity and gang involvements, and criminal activities. It also disturbs the dynamic teaching-learning environment, greatly harms the overall well being of classes (Segal 2008) and is a cause of rework and wasted time for teachers (Lalek 1995). Rationale This problem is also observed among Seniors High School students of Cansilayan National High School. Students are becoming truant towards being absent leading to poor academic performances and is becoming a major concern for the lecturers. The researchers are interested to understand the underlying reasons for the rampant absenteeism among Grade 11 and Grade 12 students of Cansilayan National High School. The researchers hope that this study would be of great help to the lecturers and the institution.
