1. Preparing Planting Plans (CPLD)

A Planting plan is a working drawing in

landscape, that indicates all the
following, precisely:

a) Species
b) Location of plants
c) Spacing
d) Number of plants
e) Schedule of plans
(Schedule of plant material is a list of species and number
required)
2. Type of Plants & Spacing:

Type of Plant Spacing (in meters)

Trees - Large 8.0
- Medium 5.0
- Small 3.0
Shrubs - Large 1.5
- Medium 1.0
- Small 0.60
Ground Cover 0.45

5. Planting Design

 Planting design is the design of the

outer spaces using materials
including plants.

 To understand how to design with

plants, it’s important to segregate
the different ways in which plants
can be used in the landscape
designing process.
5. Planting Design
Uses of Plants
•Structural
– to create vertical lines and shape of design

• Focal Points
– to create interesting pictures in the landscape

• Ground cover
– to create horizontal pattern to connect all the design

• Ornamental
– to create decorated landscape / to add interest

• Functional
– planting for use. Eg. Vegetable garden, kitchen garden
6. Criteria for selection of Plant Materials:

Plants are generally considered as ADJUNCTS to be

arranged around construction which is considered
complete even without this addition.

The fact is – Plants have a much greater role to play.

Existing vegetation has many critical implications

They – hold the soil
- modify the climate
- provide wind breaks and screens

A single inappropriate plant species can destroy the

visual quality.
6. Criteria for selection of Plant Materials:

1. Trees are the basics; if their placement

is good, the site framework is well established

2. Groups of trees in random spacing or

clumps are suited to naturalized
landscapes

3. Use of tree canopy as unifying element

brings the most visible component and
provides a spatial ceiling
4. Intermediate trees serve for wind breaks,
frame views and subdivide a larger site
into a smaller use space.

5. Use of shrubs as lower level baffles &

screens; they provide enclosure.

6. Vines are used to stabilize the slopes &

dunes

7. Ground covers are installed on the base

planes to retain the soil and soil moisture
& to provide a carpet on the base plane.
8. In all extensive tree plantings, a set of
primary trees or a theme tree is selected & a
limited no. of supporting secondary trees to
complement it are worked out.

9. Exotic species are to be used in limited areas.

11.Emphasis to traffic nodes
12.Scale induction
13.Screen planting
14.Climatic control
15.Plant as space dividers
