Importance of Mental Hygiene
- It will help a person understand oneself better.
1. The preventive Approach

- is concerned with staying away from mental disturbances that may


lead to real psychoses.

2. The Therapeutic or ameliorative Approach

- aims to correct minor behavioral maladjusment so that these do not


develop into serious handicap.

3. The Curative Approach

- the oldest and most technical approach to behavior problem.


1. Anxiety
- a prolonged, severe feeling that something unpleasant is going to
happen when there is no apparent cause of worry.

2. Depression
- a bad cause of blues that persist, leading to withdrawal from the outside
world.

3. Sudden of Change
- of mood behavior

4. Poor Performance
-or a presence of discrepancy between performance and potentials.
1. They feel comfortable about themselves.
- They are not carried away by their emotions – by their fears, anger, love,
jealousy, guilt or worries.
- They can accept their shortcomings.
- They have self respect.

2. They feel right about other people


- They are able to give love and consider the interest of others.
- They do not push people around, nor do they allow themselves to be
push around.
- They can feel that they are part of a group

3. They are able to meet the demands of life


- They do something about their problems.
- They accept their responsibilities
- They plan a head but do not fear the future.
- are behavioral disorder brought about by emotional tension resulting from
frustration, conflicts, repression, or insecurity.

Three general groups:

1. Anxiety reactions
- are manifested principally in diffused and consciously experience feelings of anxiety
and apprehension for which there seems to be no specific basis in reality.

2. Hysteria
- is a disorder in which the individual manifest, without Identifiable physical pathology,
one or more symptoms usually due to organic disease.

3. Psychastenia
- is a psychoneurotic condition accompanied by a vast range of mental and emotional
symptoms which cannot be controled.
- Psychoses are serious mental illness where behavior is unpredictable

Classes of Psychoses:

1. Organic Psychoses (somatogenic)


- are cause by change in brain or central nervous system, as senile dementia which as
attributed to organic deterioration due to age.

Four types of organic psychoses:


1. Psychoses associated with infectious diseases, especially general paresis.
2. Psychoses associated with toxins, especially alcoholic psychoses
3. Psychoses associated with head injuries;
4. Psychoses associated with old age.

2. Functional Psychosis (psychogenic)


- is a serious mental disorder involving the total personality with no observable tissue
damage.
Environmental Therapy

- Family or Relationship therapy

- Total-push therapy

- Home placement therapy

- Milieu therapy
* Relaxation therapy
* Massage
* Hydrotherapy or “water cure”
Chemotherapy
- Treatment of mental cases by the application of certain principles of bio chemistry

- Palliative or symptom-reducing

- Rehabilitative

Narcotherapy (narcosynthesis)
- Is a form of treatment in which a relaxing drug.

Shock therapy
- Is believed to stimulate a disturbed patient to reenter reality functioning.

Psychotherapy
- Is a method of verbal treatment which has been labeled “the talking cure”.
- Counseling
- Non-directive therapy or client centered therapy
- Psychoanalysis
- Hypnotherapy
- Psychodrama
- Group Therapy
