COMBINED GAS LAW SEATWORK

• What is the final volume of a 400.0 mL gas sample that is

subjected to a temperature change from 22.0 °C to 30.0
°C and a pressure change from standard pressure to
360.0 mmHg?
• A balloon of air now occupies 10.0 L at 25.0 °C and 1.00
atm. What temperature was it initially, if it occupied 9.40 L
and was in a freezer with a pressure of 0.939 atm?
Avogadro’s
Law
Amadeo Avogadro
• He was the first scientist to experiment the relationship
between the amount of gas and its volume.

• He hypothesized in 1811 that the volume of a gas is

directly related to the number of its moles when the
temperature and pressure are not changed.

• This was identified as Avogadro’s Law in honor to him as

the proponent of this law.

August 6, 1776- July 9, 1856

Turin, Italy
AVOGADRO’S LAW
• This law states that “at constant temperature and
pressure, the volume of the gas is directly proportional to
the amount of gas particles.”

• This can be expressed as:

V∝ n (T, P constant)
• The general equation for this law is:
𝑉1 𝑉2
=
𝑛1 𝑛2

Sample Problems
• A 2.7 mole of gas has a volume of 2.9 L at
certain temperature and pressure. Find the
new volume of this gas if 5 moles are added
to the original volume under the same
conditions.
GIVEN:
n1=2.7 mol V1= 2.9 mL
n2= 2.7 mol + 5.0 mol

AVOGADRO’S NUMBER
• Avogadro proposed the use of a counting unit called mole
to represent the amount of gas or number of particles
contained in a substance.

• 1 mole is equivalent to 6.02 x 1023, the Avogadro’s

Number.
MOLAR VOLUME
• At STP (Standard Temperature and Pressure), 6.02 x 1023
particles of a gas occupy a volume of 22.4 L or 1 mole of
any gas occupies a volume of 22.4 L.

• This volume occupied by one mole of any gas at STP is

referred to as molar volume.
Using Molar Volume
The molar volume is used to convert moles to liters.
Using Molar Volume

What is the volume occupied by 2.75 moles N2 gas

at STP?

2.75 moles N2 x 22.4 L = 61.6 L

occupied by 3.50 moles of methane
gas (CH4) at STP
SEATWORK
• If a 10.0-L balloon contains 0.80 moles of He, what will
be the volume of balloon that contains 0.20 moles of
He at the same temperature and pressure?
• If a balloon initially contains 0.25 mol of an ideal gas
and occupies 5.0 L, how much gas (in mole) must be
placed inside the balloon to increase its volume to 6.0
L?
• A chlorine gas (Cl2) occupies a container with a volume
of 5.0 L. Determine the amount of gas present in the
container at STP.
