Normal

Distribution

Objective:
• The learner converts a normal random
variable to a standard normal variable and
vice versa.
• Code: (M11/12SP-IIIc-4)
Review
• A continuous random variable that is normally distributed is
called a ________________________.
• The graph of a normal distribution is called a_____________.
• What can you say about the measure of mean, mode and
median ? Where it is located?
• What is the area below z = 1.90?
• What is the area above z = 1.79?
• What is the area between z=-2.39 and z = 0.84?
What do you see in the illustration?
What variable denotes the standard random variable?
Do you have any ideas regarding a standard random
variable?
Solve
• Suppose that Math final exam scores are normally
distributed with a mean of 80 and a standard deviation of 5.
If Allan got 85 in the Math final exam, what is its equivalent
z-score?
• If each normal random variable x in a normal
distribution is converted to a standard deviation unit
called standard normal variable z, the result will be the
standard normal distribution.
• A normal random variable x in normal distribution has
a corresponding z value (z-score) in standard normal
distribution. It shows how many standard deviations
the normal random variable x is from the mean.
• The following formula is used to convert any normal
variable to its corresponding z value on a standard
normal distribution.

Where:
z is the standard normal distribution value,
x is the normal random variable,
μ is the mean of the normal distribution, and
σ is the standard deviation of the normal distribution.
• If Allan got 85 in Math final exam, the equivalent z-score is 1.
• The problem can be illustrated using the figure below.

• What does it mean if Allan got a z-score of one?

• The z-score shows how many standard deviations from the
mean Allan's score is. In this example, Allan’s score is one
standard deviation above the mean.
Group Activity
• Suppose you have a set of test scores
that are normally distributed with
mean equal to 80 and standard
deviation equal to 5. If Alexa got 75,
what is her z-score?
• Math exam scores are normally
distributed with a mean of 80 and a
standard deviation of 5. If Ana got a z-
score of -2, what is her exam score?
Group Activity
• Which would you prefer: a math score
of 80 with equivalent z-score of 2 or a
math score of 83 with equivalent z-
score of – 2?
Generalization
• Does any value from the normal
distribution can be converted into its
corresponding value on a standard normal
distribution?
• What does the z-value mean?
• How do we find the z-score? What is the
formula?
• How about the normal value x? What is
the formula?
Solve the following
• A set of data is normally distributed with mean of 37
and a standard deviation of 6. If a normal
variable x=15 is selected, what is the equivalent z-
score?
• The height of sepak takraw players follows a normal
distribution with a mean of 155 cm and a standard
deviation of 10 cm. What height is two standard
deviations below the mean?
• The average number of meals a person eats per day is
three with a standard deviation of one. How many
standard deviations from the mean is four meals a
day?
