What do you know?

Discuss with a partner sitting next to you what you know

about slopes, slope-intercept form, and graphs.
Slope

- Rise⁄Run
- Change in Y over X
- Rate of Change
- Characterizes direction of
line
Types of Slopes

- Positive Slope
- +4
- Negative Slope
- -2
- Zero Slope
- 0
- Undefined Slope
- 5/0
How to Find Example: (4,2) (6,4)

Slope
Slope = y2-y1 = 4-2 = 2/2 = 1

X2-x1 6-4

Slope = 1
Now it’s your
turn! Find the slope between the two
points (8,3) and (15,7)
Just try it!
Find the slope between the two points (8,3) and (15,7)

Explanation 1: Explanation 2:

Point 1: (8,3) Point 1: (15,7)

Point 2: (15,7) Point 2: (8,3)

Slope = y2-y1 = 7-3 = 4/7 Slope = y2-y1 = 3-7 = -4 / -7 = 4/7

X2-x1 15-8 X2-x1 8-15

Slope = 4/7 Slope = 4/7

Slope-Intercept Form
Y = mx + b
What is slope-intercept form?

Slope intercept form is y = mx+b Example:

(x, y) (4, 8)

m = slope m=7

b = y-intercept (0,b) (0,2)

Slope = 8

Y-intercept = 2
How to Write a
Slope-Intercept What is the slope-intercept form

Form Equation equation?

Y = 8x + 2
Graphing Slope-Intercept Form Equations

1. Identify the y-intercept

2. Plug in easy numbers for y-values
a. Normally -1, 0, 1
3. Plot at least 3 points
4. Connect the points together to create a line
Graphing Example

Graph the equation y = 2x+1

1. Identify the y - intercept:

Y-intercept: 1 which means there is point (0,1)

1. Plug in three easy numbers and find the y values:

X = -1 : Y = 2(-1) +1 = -1

X = 0 : Y = 2(0) +1 = 1

X = 1 : Y = 2(1) +1 =3
Graphing Example (cont.)

3. Plot the three following points

on a cartesian plot (red).

● (-1,-1)
● (0,1)
● (1,3)

4. Draw a line through the points

(blue)
Let’s see what
you got! Graph the line: y = -4x -3

Just a little practice

Graph the line y = -4x-3

Y - intercept: (0,-3)

X Values: -1, 0, 1

Y Values:

Y = -4(-1)-3= 1

Y = -4(0)-3 = -3

Y = -4(1)-3 = -7

Points to Plot: (-1,1), (0,-3), and (1,-7)

Parallel vs. Perpendicular

Parallel Lines Perpendicular Lines

● Slopes are the same for both lines ● Slopes are opposite signs and the
● Y-intercept MUST be different reciprocal of one another
● Product of the slopes is -1
Ex.) What is the slope-intercept form equation
for the line that is parallel to y=3x+7 that goes Ex.) Show that 4x-y=7 and x+4y=9 are
through (0,2)? perpendicular.

Y-intercept = 2 Change both equations into slope-intercept

form.
Y = 3x+2 4x-y=7 becomes y=4x-7
x+4y=9 becomes y=-¼x + 9/4
Perpendicular because slopes are opposite and
reciprocal
A few practice
problems!
I promise you can do them!

y=6(-2)-8
y=-12-8
(-2,-20)

y=-20

y=6(0)-8

y=6x-8? x=0 y=0-8

y= -8
(0,-8)

Complete the table in your y=6(1)-8

x=1 (1,-2)
guided notes. y=6-8
y=-2
Write the equation of a line through the point (5,9) that
are perpendicular and parallel to the line 5x-y=6

Perpendicular to 5x-y=6 Parallel to 5x-y=6

● 5x-y=6 becomes y=5x-6 (slope ● 5x-y=6 becomes y=5x-6 (slope
intercept form) intercept form)
● Perpendicular slope: -⅕ ● Parallel slope: 5
● Y = -⅕x + b (substitution) ● Y = 5x + b
9=-⅕(5) + b 9=(5)(5) + b
9 = -1 + b 9=25 + b
10 = b -16 = b

Y = -⅕x + 10 Y = 5x-16
