ABSTRACT

A ball and cone type variable ratio mechanical transmission in which the
cone angles are chosen to provide optimum efficiency ,Increased power
handling capability and extended service life.

An infinitely variable speed drive mechanism which is specifically

adaptable for automobile application is made up a single ball or spherical
element interposition between drive and driven member in opposed
facing relation to one another on side of the ball.
Introduction

The primary motion of machine are power driven ; similarly feed

motion sure also power driven on small machines . The operating
cycle of machines tools, including both working and auxiliary
motions and it is obtained by means of drive and definite units and
mechanisms.
DIAGRAM
Construction & Working
The major component of the drive are steel ball positioned between two
axially displaced hollow cone discs and act as a power transmission element.

 When the load is applied, the transmission ball is pulled into a triangle
formed by the two hollow cone disks by an amount equal to the elastic
deformation of the part under load.

 Clockwise or counterclockwise rotation is permission.

Speed setting is permissible both at rest and motion.

The moment of the transmission ball is positively controlled when adjusting

for high or low speed
Design

Design consist of application of scientific principle, technical information and

imagination for development of new or improvised machine or machine to perform
a specific function with maximum economy and efficiency.
Types Of Drive

1) Stepped Drive

2) Step less Drive

1)Stepped Drive

* With a constant speed motor, there is a need for some method of varying the speed over this
range (Nmax-Nmin).In order to provide for a wide range of operating speed together with
adequate torque at lower spindle speed range be covered in a number of discrete speed ;
( stepped drives)

* The various stepped mechanical drives are as follows.

1) Step-cone pulley drive

2) All geared drives
3) Change gear system
4) Clutch type drive
5) Sliding gear type drive
6) Sliding key gear box.
2) Step-less Drive

There are many machines and mechanical units that under varying circumstances make it
desirable to be able to drives at a barely perceptible speed, an intermediate speed or a high speed

Thus an infinitely variable (step less) speed variation in which it is possible to get any desirable
speed. Some mechanical, hydraulic, drives serve as such step less drives. However the torque Vs
speed characteristic of these drives does not match torque at low speeds.

Hence the need of a step less or infinitely speed drives with following characteristic:

1) Step less or infinitely varying speed.

2) Wide range of speed variation i.e. (Nmax – Nmin)
3) Shifting from one speed to another should be shock less.
4) Ease of operation.
Operating features

It can be used as an constant torque at maximum output speeds over the entire adjustment rang.

The output speed can be up to 5400 rpm.

Standard speed ratio are 5:1 or 9:1

The drive is 85% efficient.

Speed accuracy is +/-1% of the output speed at constant load.

Speed adjustment is permissible at rest or while running.

Advantages

Infinitely variable speed available over a given range.

Easy to maintain proper pressure between contact surfaces thereby

resulting in trouble free operation.

Singular control :- Entire range of speed is covered by single knob

control.

Multiple speed can be A; where as regular clutches are of ON-OFF type

where only one speed is available.

 Ease of operation ; the speed change are gradual, without any shock.

Compact size.
Application

 Variable speed drive for conveyors in assembly line and automobile assembly plants.

 Feed drives for machine tool slides. Machine tool slides can be moved at different speed to
impart feeding motion to the cutting tool.

 Variable speed drive in automatic transfer lines and pick and place robotic devices
Conclusion

Friction rollers, arranged between spherically-shaped cone or disc on the driving and driven
shafts may be inclined in different positions.

When the axis of the top and bottom rollers coincides vertically , the speed of the driving and
driven pulleys will be same.

Speed setting is permissible both at rest and motion.
