CB/V/1718 Perimeter, Area and Volume 1 of 8

Ramu has a field in
front of his house,
where he grows
vegetables.

But he observes that
stray dogs enter the
farm and destroy all the
vegetables.

CB/V/1718 Perimeter, Area and Volume 3 of 8

Therefore, he decides to
fence the farm using a
barbed wire.
To do so he wants to
know the length of
wire he need to
purchase.

How will he find the length of wire needed?

CB/V/1718 Perimeter, Area and Volume 4 of 8

To find the length of wire needed, he should first find the
length of the boundary of the farm.

30 m
20m

Thus, he measures the length of each side of the field.

He calculated the length of boundary as follows:

20 m
30 m
I will add
There forethe length

length of the
boundary.
30 m
20 m

Length of the boundary of the field = length of all the sides of the field
= 30 m + 20 m + 30 m + 20 m
= 100 m

PERIMETER

 The word perimeter is derived from a Greek

word ‘Peri’ means ‘around’ and ‘meter’ means

‘measure’.
 Thus perimeter means measuring the length
around a closed figure.

 Thus, in simple words, the sum the lengths of all

sides of a closed figure is its perimeter.

 The unit of perimeter is same as the unit of

length.
