Fibre Channel on QFX Series Switches

 QFX5100, QFX5200, and QFX10000 switches, can

function as an FCoE transit switch
 With FCoE, unmodified FC frames are encapsulated
for transport over Ethernet
•DCB extensions must be supported on the Ethernet network
 No license is needed to use as an FCoE transit switch
As an FCoE transit switch, the switch:
• Is a Layer 2 data center bridging (DCB) switch that can transport FCoE frames
• Implements FCoE Initialization Protocol (FIP) snooping
• Connects multiple FCoE endpoints to the FC network

QFX10000 switches do not support FIP snooping

Data Center Bridging
• A set of enhancements to the IEEE 802.1 bridge
specifications
• Supports I/O convergence in the data center
• Ethernet LAN traffic and FC SAN traffic on the same
physical Ethernet network infrastructure

• Saves cost by reducing the number of networks

and devices
• Reduces the number of interfaces required
• Reduces complexity and administrative overhead

FCoE transit switch functionality is included as part of

the QFX Series default software

DCB Features
DCB specifications provide the following:

Benefits of the Disaggregated Junos OS

 JDM provides users with a familiar Junos OS CLI

Benefits of Disaggregated Junos OS

• The whole system can be managed like managing a server

platform
• Customers can install third-party applications, tools, and
services in a VM or container
• Applications and tools can be upgraded by using typical
Linux repositories and are independent of Junos OS
releases
• Modularity increases reliability
• Control and data planes can be programmed directly
through APIs

Understanding EVPN with VXLAN Data
Plane Encapsulation
EVPN

• Enables you to connect groups of dispersed customer sites using Layer 2

virtual bridges

VXLAN

• Allows you to stretch Layer 2 connection over an intervening Layer 3 network,

while providing network segmentation like a VLAN, but without the scaling
limitation of traditional VLANs

EVPN with VXLAN Encapsulation

• Handles Layer 2 connectivity at the scale required by cloud server providers

EVPN with VXLAN Data Plane Encapsulation

• Can be used with and without Juniper Networks Contrail virtualization

software

© 2017 Juniper Networks, Inc. All rights reserved. CONFIDENTIAL SSQFX01A-ML5 www.juniper.net | 42
What is a VXLAN?
• Virtual Extensible Local Area Network
• Stretches Layer 2 connections over a Layer 3 network by encapsulating Ethernet
frames in a VXLAN packet that includes IP addresses
• VTEPs handle the encapsulation/de-capsulation of traffic transported over VXLANs

VXLAN Encapsulation IP SA = source address

SA MAC DA = destination address
DA MAC
VXLAN
IP IP/UDP IP
SA MAC SA MAC SA MAC
DA MAC DA MAC DA MAC

VXLAN Packet Format

 VXLAN adds 50 to 54 bytes of additional header

information to the original Ethernet frame
•You might want to increase the MTU of the underlying
network
•Configure the MTU of the physical interfaces that participate
in the VXLAN network, not the MTU of the logical VTEP
source interface, which is ignored

VXLAN Benefits

 Benefits of using VXLANs:

•Theoretically create as many as 16 million VXLANs in an
administrative domain
•Enable migration of virtual machines between servers in
separate Layer 2 domains by tunneling over Layer 3
networks
•No need to use STP to converge the topology
• All links can be used
• Traffic can be load balanced
• Maximizes performance

MESs are interconnected using LSPs

than in the data plane

Policies can be applied on the MESs

To carefully control how network info is distributed and processed

EVPNs utilize the BGP control plane infrastructure

Policy attributes of an EVPN are similar to an IP VPN
